The GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV is a seven-seat premium plug-in hybrid MPV and the first model from GWM’s luxury WEY sub-brand to be launched in Malaysia.

Malaysia receives a single Hi4 PHEV variant, priced at RM269,800 on-the-road without insurance. It is locally assembled at EPMB’s Pegoh, Melaka plant and uses a 2+2+3 seating configuration.

Its Hi4 Performance powertrain combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors, producing a combined 325 KW (436 HP) and 642 NM. A sizeable 44.2 KWH NMC battery provides 170 KM NEDC pure-electric range, while total petrol-electric driving range exceeds 1,000 KM NEDC.

The G9 uses a modern horizontal dashboard centred around a 14.6-INCH infotainment touchscreen running GWM Coffee OS 3.

A separate 12.3-INCH digital instrument cluster sits ahead of the driver.

A Head-Up Display supplements the main screens, while 64-colour ambient lighting with breathing effects creates a more premium cabin atmosphere after dark.

The centre console incorporates storage, physical controls and a 50 W wireless smartphone charger.

One of the cabin’s standout features is a 12.5 L dual-opening refrigerator located between the front occupants.

The independently cooled or heated compartment operates between 0°C and 50°C and can remain active for up to 24 hours after the vehicle is switched off.

A 12.3-INCH fully digital instrument panel displays speed, hybrid operating status, battery level, fuel level and driving information.

The display works alongside a Head-Up Display, reducing the need for the driver to look away from the road.

Its second and third rows share an exceptionally long 1,845 MM common seat rail, allowing the second-row captain chairs to slide through a wide adjustment range.

Second-row occupants can receive as much as 1,166 MM of legroom, while the flat floor and central aisle make movement between the three rows easier.

A two-spoke multifunction steering wheel controls audio, driving information and selected vehicle functions.

Its side-curtain airbags extend approximately 3,107 MM across all three seating rows and are designed to maintain pressure for around six seconds following deployment.

Front occupants receive seat belts with double pretensioners, load limiters and Crash Lock Tongues, while second-row belts also feature pretensioners and load limiters.

Five main driving programmes are provided – Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow and AWD.

The WEY G9 uses a 1,499 CC turbocharged four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine as part of its Hi4 Performance plug-in hybrid system.

The WEY G9 features three-zone automatic climate control with dedicated ventilation throughout all three seating rows.

The Malaysian model’s air-conditioning system has been specifically calibrated for the warmer local climate.

Cabin air quality is further supported by an Intelligent AQS purification system, plasma air purifier and CN95 filtration system.

The G9 uses MacPherson independent front suspension and multi-link independent rear suspension.

Its suspension has been specifically tuned for Malaysian roads, with Frequency Response Dampers and Hydraulic Rebound Stop technology helping control large body movements while retaining a compliant ride.

GWM quotes an interior noise level of just 63.4 DB(A) at 120 KM/H, particularly impressive for a large MPV with a combustion engine.

The GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV brings an unusually comprehensive combination of performance, luxury and electric capability to Malaysia’s premium MPV market.

Its 436 HP and 642 NM Hi4 system delivers a rapid 5.7-second 0-100 KM/H time, while the substantial 44.2 KWH battery provides 170 KM NEDC electric range. The ability to accept 60 KW DC charging also gives the G9 a major advantage over many conventional PHEVs.

At RM269,800, equipment is exceptionally generous. Highlights include Nappa leather Zero Gravity captain chairs, ventilation and 10-point massage, a 12.5 L refrigerator, dual sunroofs, 21-speaker 2,440 W audio, 50 W wireless charging, 11 USB ports, Head-Up Display and a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS suite.

Its biggest compromises are its considerable 2,803 KG kerb weight, modest 233 L boot with all seven seats occupied and third-row seats that do not fold completely flat.

Nevertheless, the combination of seven genuinely usable seats, locally tuned independent suspension, AWD, more than 1,000 KM NEDC combined range and near-EV levels of daily electric capability makes the WEY G9 one of the strongest value propositions among luxury electrified MPVs in Malaysia.
