Summary

The GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV is a seven-seat premium plug-in hybrid MPV and the first model from GWM’s luxury WEY sub-brand to be launched in Malaysia.

Malaysia receives a single Hi4 PHEV variant, priced at RM269,800 on-the-road without insurance. It is locally assembled at EPMB’s Pegoh, Melaka plant and uses a 2+2+3 seating configuration.

Its Hi4 Performance powertrain combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors, producing a combined 325 KW (436 HP) and 642 NM. A sizeable 44.2 KWH NMC battery provides 170 KM NEDC pure-electric range, while total petrol-electric driving range exceeds 1,000 KM NEDC.

Interior

Dashboard

The G9 uses a modern horizontal dashboard centred around a 14.6-INCH infotainment touchscreen running GWM Coffee OS 3.

A separate 12.3-INCH digital instrument cluster sits ahead of the driver.

A Head-Up Display supplements the main screens, while 64-colour ambient lighting with breathing effects creates a more premium cabin atmosphere after dark.

Centre Console

The centre console incorporates storage, physical controls and a 50 W wireless smartphone charger.

One of the cabin’s standout features is a 12.5 L dual-opening refrigerator located between the front occupants.

The independently cooled or heated compartment operates between 0°C and 50°C and can remain active for up to 24 hours after the vehicle is switched off.

Instrument Cluster

A 12.3-INCH fully digital instrument panel displays speed, hybrid operating status, battery level, fuel level and driving information.

The display works alongside a Head-Up Display, reducing the need for the driver to look away from the road.

Hybrid-specific information allows the driver to monitor operation of the petrol engine and electric drivetrain.

Seats

The first two rows use premium Nappa leather upholstery, while the third row is finished in leatherette.

The driver receives eight-way electric adjustment, four-way lumbar support, memory, welcome function, ventilation and a 10-point massage system.

The front passenger seat also receives electric adjustment, memory and ventilation.

Second-row passengers receive six-way electrically adjustable Zero Gravity captain chairs, complete with ventilation, 10-point massage, electric leg rests, four-way headrests and integrated seat-control panels.

Folding tray tables are positioned behind the front seats, while the third row uses a wide sofa-style bench with substantial cushioning.

Space

The WEY G9 accommodates seven occupants in a 2+2+3 configuration.

Its second and third rows share an exceptionally long 1,845 MM common seat rail, allowing the second-row captain chairs to slide through a wide adjustment range.

Second-row occupants can receive as much as 1,166 MM of legroom, while the flat floor and central aisle make movement between the three rows easier.

Wide 791 MM door openings and a low 370 MM step-in height are designed to improve access for children and elderly passengers.

Steering Functions

A two-spoke multifunction steering wheel controls audio, driving information and selected vehicle functions.

The steering column provides four-way manual adjustment.

The transmission selector is positioned on the steering column, freeing additional room within the centre-console area.

Storage Space

Storage is generous throughout the three-row cabin.

The large centre console, door pockets, front compartments and seatback areas provide space for smaller personal belongings.

The 12.5 L refrigerator adds a particularly useful chilled or heated storage area accessible from both the front and rear.

Cup Holders

Cup and bottle storage is provided throughout the cabin for all three seating rows.

The centre-console area accommodates front beverages, while additional holders and storage areas are incorporated around the second- and third-row passenger compartments.

Charging Ports

The WEY G9 provides an extensive 11 USB ports throughout the cabin.

The first row receives two USB-A and one USB-C port, the second row provides two USB-A and two USB-C ports, while the third row receives another two USB-A and two USB-C ports.

A 50 W wireless smartphone charger is also fitted.

The high-voltage battery additionally supports 3.3 KW Vehicle-to-Load functionality, allowing compatible external electrical appliances to be powered directly from the vehicle.

Build Quality

The interior combines Nappa leather, soft-touch surfaces, metallic detailing and 64-colour ambient lighting.

Second-row Zero Gravity seats, substantial cushioning and the large integrated refrigerator reinforce its premium-MPV positioning.

Black or brown interior colour schemes are available, both paired with a grey roof lining.

Boot Space

Minimum luggage capacity stands at 233 L with all seven seats in use.

The flexible second- and third-row rail system allows luggage capacity to expand to a maximum of approximately 1,725 L.

The third-row seats do not fold completely flat because GWM has prioritised thicker seat cushions and passenger comfort over an entirely level load floor.

Exterior

Body Dimensions

The WEY G9 measures 5,050 MM long, 1,985 MM wide and 1,900 MM tall, with a substantial 3,085 MM wheelbase.

Ground clearance stands at 155 MM, while kerb weight is 2,803 KG and gross vehicle mass reaches 3,328 KG.

Despite being shorter than some Chinese luxury MPV rivals, the long wheelbase and 1.9-metre height provide substantial passenger space across all three rows.

Front View

The G9 adopts WEY’s nature-inspired design language, with the large front grille influenced by the appearance of a cascading waterfall.

Vertical chrome elements give the MPV a more traditional luxury appearance than many grille-less electrified vehicles.

The tall bonnet, broad bumper and substantial width reinforce its premium MPV positioning.

Rear View

The upright rear body maximises interior and luggage space.

Its distinctive bamboo-inspired LED tail lamps use layered graphics intended to provide a recognisable lighting signature.

A large sensor-operated powered tailgate provides convenient access to the luggage area, while a hidden rear wiper maintains the clean exterior appearance.

Headlamps

The WEY G9 features Intelligent LED headlamps as standard.

Equipment includes automatic headlamp activation, Auto High Beam, LED daytime running lights and Follow-Me-Home lighting.

The intelligent lighting system automatically manages illumination according to surrounding traffic and ambient conditions.

Tail Lamps

Full-LED tail lamps are fitted as standard.

The vertically detailed lighting graphics draw inspiration from bamboo and complement the G9’s tall rear profile.

A dedicated LED rear fog lamp is also included.

Side Mirror

Exterior mirrors are electrically adjustable and automatically folding.

Integrated LED turn indicators are housed within the mirror assemblies.

The mirrors fold automatically when the vehicle is locked.

Brakes

The G9 uses ventilated disc brakes at both the front and rear.

Regenerative braking from the hybrid motors operates alongside the conventional braking system.

Electronic braking assistance includes ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Traction Control and Electronic Parking Brake with Automatic Vehicle Hold.

Wheels

The WEY G9 rides on 18-INCH 10-double-spoke two-tone alloy wheels.

These are fitted with 245/50 R18 Michelin Primacy 5 Energy tyres.

The relatively generous tyre sidewall suits the model’s comfort-focused MPV positioning while helping maintain ride compliance over poorer road surfaces.

Active Safety

The WEY G9 receives a comprehensive active-safety package including ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Traction Control and Electronic Stability systems.

Additional functions include Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, Tyre Pressure Monitoring and Second Collision Mitigation.

A 360-degree Surround View camera with Transparent Chassis functionality, front and rear radar sensors and Manoeuvre Emergency Braking provide additional protection at lower speeds.

Passive Safety

The G9 is fitted with six airbags, comprising front, side and full-length curtain airbags.

Its side-curtain airbags extend approximately 3,107 MM across all three seating rows and are designed to maintain pressure for around six seconds following deployment.

Front occupants receive seat belts with double pretensioners, load limiters and Crash Lock Tongues, while second-row belts also feature pretensioners and load limiters.

ISOFIX child-seat mounting points are provided, together with a reinforced high-strength body structure and extensive multi-layer protection around the high-voltage battery.

Drive Modes

Five main driving programmes are provided – Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow and AWD.

Eco prioritises efficiency, Normal provides balanced everyday performance and Sport sharpens drivetrain response.

Snow softens torque delivery on low-grip surfaces, while AWD mode maximises four-wheel-drive traction.

Separate hybrid power modes include EV Mode, EV Priority Mode and Intelligent HEV Mode, allowing the vehicle to alter how aggressively it uses its battery and combustion engine.

Infotainment

A 14.6-INCH touchscreen running Coffee OS 3 forms the main infotainment interface.

The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity and full-vehicle voice commands.

Connected functions can also be accessed through the GWM mobile application, including vehicle status, charging information, location and remote climate control.

Driver Assistance

A comprehensive Level 2 ADAS suite is standard.

Systems include Adaptive Cruise Control with Intelligent Cornering, Traffic Jam Assist, Front Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking with Intersection Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Center Keeping.

Further features include Emergency Lane Keeping, Lane Change Assistance, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Braking and Door Open Warning.

Traffic Sign Recognition and Speed Assist are also provided.

A Fully Automated Integrated Parking system can perform parking manoeuvres with minimal driver input.

Sound System

The WEY G9 features an exceptionally powerful 21-speaker audio system with up to 2,440 W peak output.

VSC Adaptive Sound Compensation automatically adjusts the audio output according to background noise conditions.

The system is designed to provide cinema-like coverage across all three seating rows.

Performance

Engine

The WEY G9 uses a 1,499 CC turbocharged four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine as part of its Hi4 Performance plug-in hybrid system.

The combustion engine produces 110 KW (148 HP) and 240 NM.

A front permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor adds 80 KW (107 HP) and 170 NM, while a separate rear motor produces 135 KW (181 HP) and 232 NM.

Combined system output reaches 325 KW (436 HP) and 642 NM.

Transmission

The petrol engine and front electric motor are integrated with a four-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission.

The DHT allows the G9 to operate in multiple series- and parallel-hybrid configurations according to vehicle speed, power demand and battery state.

This differs from simpler PHEV systems that rely primarily on a single fixed-ratio electric transmission.

Drivetrain

The WEY G9 uses intelligent electronically controlled all-wheel drive.

Its front combustion-engine/electric-motor assembly is supplemented by a separate rear electric motor, allowing torque to be distributed rapidly between both axles.

GWM’s Intelligent Torque Vectoring Control can vary front-to-rear power distribution from fully front-driven to fully rear-driven depending on conditions.

Acceleration

Despite weighing more than 2.8 tonnes, the WEY G9 accelerates from 0-100 KM/H in 5.7 seconds.

Maximum speed stands at 190 KM/H.

Its 642 NM combined torque gives the large MPV particularly strong overtaking and highway performance.

Fuel Consumption

The G9 uses a 44.2 KWH ternary lithium NMC battery.

Pure-electric driving range stands at 170 KM NEDC, equivalent to approximately 145 KM on the WLTP cycle.

With its 58 L fuel tank, combined petrol-electric range exceeds 1,000 KM NEDC, corresponding to roughly 850 KM WLTP.

Official weighted fuel consumption is 1.2 L/100 KM NEDC, while fuel consumption with a depleted battery is rated at 6.2 L/100 KM.

Maximum AC charging input is 6.6 KW, requiring approximately 6.5 hours from 15-100%.

Unlike many PHEVs, the G9 also supports 60 KW CCS2 DC fast charging, allowing a 30-80% recharge in approximately 26 minutes.

A 3.3 KW V2L system allows the battery to supply external electrical equipment.

Comfort

Convenience

The G9 is heavily equipped for family and chauffeur use.

Features include full-vehicle keyless entry, proximity unlocking and walk-away locking, automatic wipers, dual sunroofs and a sensor-operated powered tailgate.

The GWM app enables remote vehicle starting, locking, air-conditioning, window operation, seat ventilation and charging-status monitoring.

The 12.5 L refrigerator can cool or heat food and drinks, while seatback tray tables provide convenient work or dining surfaces for second-row passengers.

Rear Air Vents

The WEY G9 features three-zone automatic climate control with dedicated ventilation throughout all three seating rows.

The Malaysian model’s air-conditioning system has been specifically calibrated for the warmer local climate.

Cabin air quality is further supported by an Intelligent AQS purification system, plasma air purifier and CN95 filtration system.

Ride Comfort

The G9 uses MacPherson independent front suspension and multi-link independent rear suspension.

Its suspension has been specifically tuned for Malaysian roads, with Frequency Response Dampers and Hydraulic Rebound Stop technology helping control large body movements while retaining a compliant ride.

The long 3,085 MM wheelbase and 245/50 R18 tyres further favour passenger comfort over aggressive handling response.

Sound Insulation

Refinement is one of the G9’s strongest features.

The windscreen together with the first- and second-row side windows use double-layer acoustic glass, while extensive 360-degree sound-absorbing materials reduce road and powertrain noise.

A HALOSonic Active Noise Cancellation system further suppresses unwanted frequencies.

GWM quotes an interior noise level of just 63.4 DB(A) at 120 KM/H, particularly impressive for a large MPV with a combustion engine.

Wrap Up

Conclusion

The GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV brings an unusually comprehensive combination of performance, luxury and electric capability to Malaysia’s premium MPV market.

Its 436 HP and 642 NM Hi4 system delivers a rapid 5.7-second 0-100 KM/H time, while the substantial 44.2 KWH battery provides 170 KM NEDC electric range. The ability to accept 60 KW DC charging also gives the G9 a major advantage over many conventional PHEVs.

At RM269,800, equipment is exceptionally generous. Highlights include Nappa leather Zero Gravity captain chairs, ventilation and 10-point massage, a 12.5 L refrigerator, dual sunroofs, 21-speaker 2,440 W audio, 50 W wireless charging, 11 USB ports, Head-Up Display and a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS suite.

Its biggest compromises are its considerable 2,803 KG kerb weight, modest 233 L boot with all seven seats occupied and third-row seats that do not fold completely flat.

Nevertheless, the combination of seven genuinely usable seats, locally tuned independent suspension, AWD, more than 1,000 KM NEDC combined range and near-EV levels of daily electric capability makes the WEY G9 one of the strongest value propositions among luxury electrified MPVs in Malaysia.
