- This Man Does Not Plan to Stop Owning Porsches
Brand is a very prominent factor when it comes to purchasing cars, buyers will go for their preferred brands even when rivalling marques have tangible advantages.
While brand preference is real when it comes to car buying, brand passion is still rare. Though we are not sure whether passion even comes close to Ottocar J.’s obsession with Porsches. This year, Ottocar collected a Porsche 718 Spyder at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen factory, which is his 80th Porsche.
As a celebration, he even got to affix his own Porsche emblem, a very rare honour. His fascination with Porsches started almost 50 years ago, when he first saw one on a race track. This prompted him to save up for his first Porsche, a 911 E in Speed Yellow, also known as the “oil cap model”.
In 1977, he would collect his first Porsche directly from the factory, a 911 Carrera 3.0. Since then, collecting Porsche cars has become his lifelong passion. As a keen driver, he is partial to the race models, he stayed true to his motorsport roots by owning a 917, a 956, a 964 Cup, a 910 (with the rare 8-cylinder engine), and a 904 with its original Fuhrmann engine.
Today, the size of his collection is around 38 cars. He can drive a different one every day for a month, and two on weekends. All of his toys are housed in a separate building which he calls his living room.
The living room is also filled with race and car meet memorabilia, in it is a toy shop, antique store and a cinema showing Steve McQueen’s Le Mans feature film. For his daily drives, he would drive 9 cars in rotation, including a 911 R, a 991 911 Speedster and 2 Boxter Spyders from the last 2 generations. He wouldn’t name a favourite but he admitted the 981 Boxter Spyder was chosen for most outings.
“The sound, how it drives, its suspension, everything that it does – it is the only one of my road-legal Porsche that reminds me of my 910,” says Ottocar – this man is without a doubt a true driving enthusiast.
With its commitment to engineering, Porsches have a legion of fans who would happily shell out a premium for collectibles. If you search hard enough, you might just net yourself a unit that would appreciate in value.
