Elegantly Euphemising Its Athletic Prowess, The Porsche 911 GT3 With Touring Package
Porsche’s new 7th edition 911 GT3, a high-performance athlete that doesn’t flaunt its finesse enough, now adorns a Touring package akin to its predecessor.
Focusing on purist 911 design and elements of a classic interior, the name ‘Touring package’ goes back to an equipment variant of the 911 Carrera RS from the 1973 model year.
Then, in 2017 Porsche revitalised the Touring package again for the previous generation Type 991 of the 911 GT3, and now the new 7th gen is continuing the legacy.
Taking an overall gander, the exterior’s most conspicuous alteration is the fixed rear wing of the 911 GT3 that features an automatically extending rear spoiler.
To unify the equipment, the front end is painted completely in the exterior colour. Whereas, flipping to the back, a rear lid grille with the ‘GT3 Touring’ logo is placed over the high-revving engine.
Also, silver-hued trim strips made of high-gloss anodised aluminium on the side windows are another distinguishing feature that underlines the newcomer’s discreet appearance.
Said trim strips of the side windows, plus the tailpipes of the 911 GT3’s sports exhaust system, are finished in a shade of silver.
However, these elements are finished in satin-gloss black in the optional Touring package, with the front light modules getting dark tints.
Transitioning inside, the 911 GT3 with Touring package’s interior also offers the atmosphere of a classic sports car.
Available exclusively for the Touring package, it comes equipped with extended leather items in black, which gives a sporty yet elegant finish.
Gazing at the front of the dashboard and the upper side sections of the door trim panels, present are unique surface embossed finishes.
As for the steering wheel rim, gear lever, centre console cover, the door panels’ armrests, and the door handles, all are covered in premium black leather.
The partial leather interior features black stitching with the seat centre panels and roof liner covered in black fabric.
Other than that, the head restraints bear embossed Porsche Crests. While the door entry guards, trim elements on the dashboard and centre console are made of brushed black aluminium.
System wise, to emphasise Porsche’s racing DNA further, the cockpit now comes fitted with a track screen for the first time.
At the push of a button, the digital displays on the left and right of the central rev counter show the essential information on tyre and oil pressure, oil and coolant temperature and fuel tank level.
Speaking of which, the 911 GT3 has an easily accessible drive mode switch on the steering wheel that grants fast switching between ‘Normal’ settings and the customisable ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ modes.
If that doesn’t rock your boat, Porsche also offers almost all the optional equipment for the 911 GT3 in combination with the Touring package.
This includes all exterior and wheel colours, LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System and Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus.
Along with various assist systems, PCCB ceramic braking system, the front axle lift system, all seat variants, the audio systems and the Chrono package.
Touching on the latter, Porsche Design also provides a very special chronograph for patrons of the 911 GT3 with Touring Package.
A timepiece featuring movements with flyback function, its winding rotor evokes the vehicle’s wheel design and comes in six different versions corresponding to the vehicle configuration.
Aesthetically, the timepiece gets a dial bezel in agate grey metallic, based on the vehicle’s paint finish, while the dial itself has a matte black finish.
Moreover, it also features luminous yellow chronograph clock hands that complement the colour of the 911 GT3’s rev counter.
Furthering the design, the chronograph 911 GT3 with Touring package gets a strap made of Porsche vehicle leather with ‘GT3’ embossing and black decorative stitching with Porsche vehicle thread.
Performance aspects, the 7th edition of this high-performance sports car features Porsche’s racing technology for a production model that is now more systematically heightened than ever before.
For instance, the 911 GT3 comes with a double-wishbone front suspension and the uncompromising aerodynamics of the new swan-neck rear wing.
Besides that, excluded from the Touring package, it also gets a striking diffuser originating from the successful classic 911 RSR GT racing car.
Lurking in the engine bay is the 375 kW (510 PS) 4.0-litre 6-cylinder boxer mill that’s based on the drive unit of the 911 GT3 R which was tried and tested in endurance racing.
Married to the powertrain is an optional drivetrain setup of a 6-speed GT sports manual transmission or a first for the Touring package, the 7-speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK).
Despite a wider body, larger wheels and additional technical features, the weight of the new GT3 is on a par with its predecessor at 1,418 kg with the MT trans and 1,435 kg with the PDK trans.
Case in point, aiding the weight-saving are the carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) bonnet, lightweight glass windows, forged alloy wheels and lightweight sports exhaust system.
All things considered, the 7th edition of the powerful 911 GT3 can now be ordered with the Touring package as an option at no extra charge.
Clearly proving to be worthy ever since the time of its predecessor, the Porsche 911 GT3 appeals to all lovers of top-class sports cars with a passion for understatement and classic driving pleasure.
