JPJ has issued a total of 1,489 summonses during an enforcement operation on VEP at the JB-Singapore land border.

A total of 1,489 summonses have been issued by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) during the enforcement operation on Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) at the Malaysia-Singapore land border between July 1 and Aug 2, 2025.

Announced via its official Facebook page, JPJ senior director of Enforcement Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said during the operation period, a total of 14,379 Singapore-registered vehicles were inspected, taking place at both the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) complexes at Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB), as well as the Johor Bahru city area.

“Of the 1,489 owners or drivers summoned, most were found to have failed to install and activate the VEP RFID tag.

“One of the common excuses given was that they believed the Malaysian government had not yet begun enforcement and it was still in the advocacy stage,” the senior director told Bernama after the Special VEP Enforcement Operation at the BSI exit ramp in Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru.

Muhammad Kifli added that of all the summonses issued, only one individual refused to cooperate, although the person eventually complied when JPJ enforcement officers wanted to seize the vehicle.

He further elaborated that so far during the operation, nearly 90% of Singapore-registered private vehicles had already obtained the VEP by installing and activating the RFID tag. As of July 31, a total of 277,930 VEP RFID tags had been issued to Singapore vehicle owners, involving both private individuals and companies.

The department also advised all Singaporean drivers to immediately register, install, and activate their VEP RFID tags to avoid difficulties when entering and exiting Malaysia. Foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia without a valid VEP are liable for an RM300 fine, as stipulated under Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
