The Commission For Rolls-Royce Boat Tail: The Next Chapter Has Been Revealed!
Rolls-Royce proudly unveils the next chapter of its coachbuilt commissioned Boat Tail, one of only three ever made or to be made.
The boat tail is entirely hand-built, with the body panels fashioned from vast, single sheets of aluminium to create the distinctive outline inspired by racing yachts of the early twentieth century, and will be officially unveiled on May 21st at the Concorso d'Eleganza, Villa d'Este, on the shores of Lake Como in Northern Italy.
The aesthetic design pays homage to the client's father with four pearl shells chosen from his private collection for their unique colour and complexity. The shells inspired the exterior colour, which is one of the most intricate Bespoke finishes ever created by Rolls-Royce.
The color's foundation, which varies slightly depending on lighting, is a blend of oyster and soft rose with large white and bronze mica flakes.
The contrasting cognac-colored bonnet, custom-made for this Boat Tail, features fine bronze and gold-colored aluminium mica flakes, as well as a layer of crystal and iced matt clear coat, adding significant warmth and depth to the car's appearance. Boat Tail's technical fibre lower sills feature a rose gold woven thread.
To ensure a sensitive and sophisticated appearance, the rear deck is swathed in Royal Walnut veneer and inlaid with rose gold-plated pinstripes with a satin-brushed finish.
The client chose the Royal Walnut for its beautiful properties as it matures over time, a material that will gradually transition to the tonal properties of the cognac colour.
The car's Pantheon Grille is milled from a single, solid billet of aluminium and, of course, is adorned with a rose gold Spirit of Ecstasy.
The interior is a carefully curated mix of cognac and oyster-colored leathers and Royal Walnut veneer, with rose gold and mother-of-pearl accents throughout.
The dashboard's focal point is a mother-of-pearl timepiece with a simple design that does not detract from the precious material. The same prized material adorns the control switches and instrument dials, forging a strong visual and material link between the car, the owner, and his family heritage.
Alex Innes, Head of Coachbuild Design, said, “Boat Tail is a step-change in ingenuity and creative liberty. Building a motor car by hand offers a new realm of exploration and possibility: we can accomplish things and resolve challenges that normal industrialised methods would prohibit. This is the tale of two worlds: a modern motor car of contemporary design, made possible by historical techniques and time-honoured craft. It is truly, one-of-a-kind.”
