- Meet Ducati's First Electric Motorcycle! - Stunning, Isnt’t It?
You may be sceptical of Ducati's first-ever battery-powered motorcycle, but if the latest details and images of the 'V21L' prototype are any indication, this ride looks serious!
Ducati's R&D teams worked with pro riders like Michele Pirro, Alex De Angelis, and Chaz Davies to develop the electric racer, which will compete as the sole racer in the 2023 FIM MotoE World Cup, in which 18 V21Ls will compete for victory alongside some of the world's best riders.
The bike's jaw-dropping looks - the stealthy racing-inspired black and red livery, bare carbon fibre body panels, and overall aggressive design have all been designed in-house by Centro Stile Ducati.
The V21L delivers 148bhp to the bike's chubby rear tyre thanks to a 110kg 18kWh battery pack and a lightweight motor. On the Italian Mugello circuit, Ducati claims the V21L can reach speeds in excess of 275kmh (171mph).
Up front, a hlins NPX suspension fork derived from the Superleggera V4 is used, while a TTX36 adjustable shock absorber from the Swedish company is used at the rear. A Brembo double-disc steel braking system provides much-needed stopping power, and all of this cutting-edge racing gear and battery technology means the machine weighs in at 225kg - a reasonable weight for an electric motorcycle.
Claudio Domenicali, Ducati's top dog, said of the V21L, "A few weeks ago I had the extraordinary opportunity to ride the Ducati MotoE on the track and I immediately realised that I was living in a historic moment." Domenicali continued, "Ducati has relied heavily on its racing DNA to develop the most performing electric racing bike that current technology allows."
We can't wait to see this battery-powered racer in action at next year's FIM MotoE World Cup, and who knows, maybe a street-legal version will follow soon after.
