Heads up MotoGP fans, the sport is finally marking its return to the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) this year after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Taking place from Oct 21 to 23 at SIC, the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia 2022 has plenty in store for fans in attendance.

The event, which marks its 23rd edition, was officially launched earlier today at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, KLCC by Minister of Youth & Sports YB Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Bin Datuk Azumu. Alongside him too were SIC CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif, as well as Petronas Senior General Manager of Group Strategic Communications, Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz.

“Petronas is excited to see the return of MotoGP to Malaysia and it gives us great pride to headline the event, as the championship is synonymous with passion, innovation, pace and performance – values that resonates well with Petronas,” expressed Datin Anita in her keynote speech.

The event also saw SIC seizing the opportunity to officially announced that the circuit will field Syarifuddin Azman, better known as ‘Damok’, as a wildcard entry. Damok will compete in the Moto3 category aboard an SIC-liveried Honda NSF250RW. The youngster has proven his mettle in the Moto3 Junior Moto3 Championship (CEV) in Spain, and is keen to prove his might on home soil too.

“With no Malaysian riders competing full season in the Championship, I believe Damok will be the pull factor for Malaysians to cheer fellow Malaysian on the grid,” said Shafriman after officially announcing the youngster’s wildcard entry.

Apart from that, SIC also laid out a myriad of on- and off-track activities that fan can expect during the race weekend. Highlights include a novel  Night Track Tour experience, Public Pitlane Walk, Riders Autograph Session, as well as a Public Cooking Contest with MotoGP riders at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on race week Wednesday.

On top of which, SIC also announced a special lucky draw contest that’s open exclusively for ticket holders. The draw’s grand prizes are two motorcycles – a Yamaha NVX ABS and Yamaha Y15ZR – worth RM22,000. Notably, both bikes are made even more unique as they feature a special SIC livery too.

SIC also keenly noted that the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia 2022 will mark the first event were SIC will present a new lifestyle experience with a curated festival feel that combines local food and culture, outdoor, live music, art installations and unique activations under one roof.

Lastly, in conjunction with the upcoming Merdeka Day festivities, SIC is running a special ticket sales promotion that lasts until Aug 31. Tickets for the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia 2022 can be purchased online via SIC’s official website, sepangcircuit.com.
