UMW Toyota has officially launched the all-new Toyota Veloz – a 7-seater premium multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), replacing its predecessor, the Toyota Avanza. The Veloz only comes in a single, maxed-out variant, equipped with premium features and specs.

Fully-assembled in Malaysia, the Veloz is built on Daihatsu’s New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform – developed by Daihatsu. This B-segmented MPV-crossover is poised to debut into the premium compact MPV market, with its closest rival being the Mitsubishi Xpander.

From the overall exterior façade, it is no surprise to see that the Veloz shared distinctive design language with its original cousins – the Daihatsu Xenia – as well as its fellow rebadged counterparts, the 2022 Perodua Alza. Boasting a rugged look, the Veloz comes standard with distinctive front grille and aggressive, SUV-like front skirt.

The headlights are full-LED, now with Daytime Running Lights (DRL) function and sequential turn signal lights. On the back, the new taillights go across the width of the car, with a distinctive angular look on its ends – an effort to widen the car’s otherwise boxy, narrow façade.

On the side, the Veloz comes with foldable side mirrors attached with illuminating lights targeting the ground next to the door. Said lights alongside with the headlights will illuminate on approach or when unlocking the doors remotely.

This MPV is also equipped with minimal yet functional roof rails that can support up to 75 KG of load – providing extra cargo options while giving the more crossover feel to this family MPV. Completing its side look is the new 17-inch ten spoke alloy wheels, wrapped around with 205/50 R17-sized tyres.

On the inside, this B-MPV comes with three rows of seats, accommodating up to 7 persons. The third-row seats are completely foldable to allow more boot spaces and hauling big loads. Said seats are finished with semi-leather upholstery, while all the side paddings and dashboards are made of soft touch materials.

A standalone infotainment display headlines the front central console. The 9-inch, full-coloured central display comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, available either wired or wirelessly. For the driver, a 7-inch LCD multi-info display offers customizable layouts of 4 different presentations, with operating controls and switches available around the steering wheel.

Three full-sized USB charging ports are available throughout the interior space, with an additional wireless Qi 2.4 charging pad up front and 12 V power socket also provided. Automatic air conditioning system ensures all passengers – even those sitting on third row seats – are kept cool, thanks to the addition of air conditioning vents mounted on the car’s ceiling.

On the performance side, the all-new Veloz boasts a 1.5 L 2NR-VE engine, featuring Toyota’s proprietary Dual VVTi (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) engine tech. This DOHC 16-valve 4-cyl power mill produces 104 HP with maximum torque of 138 NM, with all this power going into its front wheel axles – a change from its rear-wheel driven predecessor, the Avanza.

Also new to the Veloz is the Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic gearbox with 7-step manual shifting option available. Plus, there are three new driving modes – namely PWR, ECO and NORMAL – switchable while driving, providing options for better fuel economy or performance. Gone is also the old lever handbrake, with Electronic Parking Brake system with Automatic Brake Hold feature taking its place.

In-line with its family-friendly theme, this NCAP 5-star rated MPV comes standard with some of Toyota’s latest hi-tech safety features. The Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) comprises multiple cameras and sensors that powers multiple safety systems such as pre-collision warning, lane keep assist, lane departure warning and lane departure prevention.

Additional safety features including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system that works alongside the TSS. Adaptive high beam, Blindspot Monitor and Rear-Cross Traffic Alert completes the active safety package in this family MPV.

With car theft becoming more common nowadays, the Veloz’s Vehicle Telematic System (VTS) can prevent this by allowing owners to track their car’s location via an app. Owners can also check for the vehicle’s status such as its running speed and current location perfect for tracking your lost car.

In a market for a dashcam? No worries, as this new MPV comes with optional front Digital Video Recorder (DVR) – a well-thought addition that helps in providing evidence for any incidents occurring, but also might help boost your social media presence, too.

Coming in two exclusive two-tone colourways, Blue Metallic and Silver Metallic – both featuring Black roof, the Veloz also comes with standard Metallic Black, Red and White colours.

The all-new Veloz is poised for a price tag beginning at RM95,000 (sans insurance), including a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty. 24-hour daily road assists also provided by UMW Toyota for all Veloz owners, both private and company.
