Chevron Lines Road Markings – What Are They?

Chevron line acts to ensure smooth traffic flow particularly in urban areas and even on major thoroughfares. Just so you know, these lines which are white diagonal stripes between lanes are typically found before and after the flyover.

According to our BM writer’s personal experience, she was once arrested for passing through the Chevron line passage.

Apparently, it was illegal to cut in line when traffic is moving slowly as she did not know the function of the Chevron line at the time. Luckily, she was fortunate to be released from any action at the discretion of the traffic police.

Nonetheless, I bet there're many drivers who are not aware or confused about the meaning of this Chevron line including myself.

Recently, a motorcyclist was filmed rolling on the road after passing through a Chevron line.

Arrows indicate Chevron lines

The Investigation and Traffic Enforcement Department (JSPT) of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) shared inputs regarding the Chevron lines.

Here is the function of the Chevron line:

One of the signs on the road surface to provide guidance, warning, and information to road users not to enter other lanes

• To control and ensure the smooth flow of traffic

• As a place to park a damaged car

According to JSPT, motorcyclists who ride on the white line of the road can cause their motorcycle to skid and lose control.

"For that, avoid being on the white line of the road, especially when the road is wet. Make sure the motorcycle tires are not bald because it will cause the risk of an accident that can take lives," he wrote on his Facebook account.
