Carmakers Hustling To Fulfill Orders Before March 2023

Carmakers are rushing to fulfil orders placed during the sales tax (SST) exemption period. These vehicles must be delivered before March 31st in order for customers to benefit from the tax break.

Datuk Aishah Ahmad, head of the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), stated that while car manufacturing had improved, some brands, particularly European ones, were experiencing parts and chip shortages.

As a result, she stated, not all companies would be able to meet the deadline for producing all SST-exempt vehicles.

"There will be no consequence if not all cars can be delivered by the deadline, except for cancellation of confirmed orders, which we hope will be a small number," she said, hoping that the government will be more accommodating with the deadline.

According to Aishah, most car firms will register new vehicles in December.

Aishah stated that the industry was nearly approaching the MAA's target of 600,000 unit sales for 2022 and was projected to exceed its whole industry volume prediction.

Proton's deputy chief executive officer, Roslan Abdullah, stated that Proton was confident of meeting all orders placed before the deadline, barring any unforeseen situations that would significantly limit the supply of parts and components.

He stated that current automobile production figures were constant, and that the countermeasures implemented earlier to adjust for spare component shortages had helped them sustain volume.

"We are not currently operating at full capacity, but there is enough supply to ensure that customer wait times are not excessive."

"At the same time," he continued, "we are carefully regulating waiting periods for customers who reserved their cars after June 30 so that those with fresh appointments do not have to wait too long."

Roslan further stated that Proton would focus on sales promotion before the calendar year 2023 to increase the order book heading and assure minimum carry-over stockpiles.

On June 20, then-Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz revealed that a total of 868,422 vehicles had been sold, with an RM4.7bil sales tax exemption.

Due to the worldwide microprocessor shortage, 264,000 vehicles booked during the sales tax exemption period have yet to be completed.
