Penang is inviting proposals to establish its water taxi service as an additional mode of island-wide public transportation.

The state and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) intend to provide the water taxi service on the island as a different mode of transportation service that would be simple for the general public to access to reduce traffic congestion, according to Zairil Khir Johari, chairman of the Penang infrastructure and transport committee.

"It would give the general public extra access for both long distance city transport and tourism purposes.

During a press conference in Komtar on Friday, he stated, "The Transport Ministry has given MBPP

The request for proposals (RFP), according to Zairil, would go out on December 12 and close on February 27 of the following year.

"The RFP is accessible to all local businesses, and the bidder must be registered with the Registrar of Societies or the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) (RoS).

"Additionally, they must have a minimum of RM500,000 in paid-up capital, and attending upcoming briefings is required of them.

"Preparing the preliminary feasibility study report, proposal of jetty locations, specifications of vessels, financial model, and period of implementation would be among the components for the RFP," he continued.

Companies interested in participating can acquire the necessary documentation online at ep.penang.gov.my.
