2024 Nissan GT-R Debuts in Japan with NISMO Special Edition and Premium T-Spec

This is it. After countless rumours over the years, Nissan has finally introduced the 2024 GT-R in Japan. While its fellow Nissan sibling, the Z, had been garnered a new era redesign, it seems that Nissan refused to ‘outgrew’ the ageing look of the GT-R.

Debuted at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2023, the 2024 model year GT-R sees both its front and rear fascias being tweaked slightly. Gone is the old V-motion grille, as the cleaner grille design with bigger air intake opening replaces it. Also being reworked is the actual mesh cover used in the grille, where Nissan engineers have opted for a thinner material and design for the mesh cover, which is said to provide better engine cooling performance, as well as reducing drag.

Moving to the rear part, both the rear bumper and diffuser underwent a minor redesign. Plus, the 2024 GT-R now dons a brand new rear wing design, featuring sharper angles for change. Nissan claims that all of these minor design tweaks are not cosmetic per se, as it actually enhances the GT-R’s aerodynamic performance, albeit the drag coefficient remains unchanged at 0.26.

Making a comeback for the 2024 year model is the GT-R T-Spec, which is essentially the range-topping spec for the GT-R, before you go full-blown with the Nismo special edition. Also returning from the dead is a couple of GT-R’s heritage colourways, namely the Midnight Purple and Millenium Jade, which featured above.

The 2024 GT-R T-Spec rides on 20-inch gold-painted forged wheels. Other design highlights include the wider body, Nismo-tuned dynamic control system, special badging, as well as special edition Mori Green leather and suede upholstery for the interior.

Aside from the T-Spec GT-R, the Japanese domestic market (JDM) will also get the new 2024 GT-R Nismo special edition. Just like the T-Spec, this souped-up, Nismo-built GT-R is also primed with redesigned bodykit, as well as new rear wing. While sporting the same new front bumper as the standard 2024 GT-R, albeit with a bigger air intake, the Nismo edition GT-R comes with racing front splitter with side canards, as well as a pair of hexagonal-shaped fog lamps.

On the back, the new swan neck-style rear wing is said to boast about 10% more surface area. The black-hued rear diffuser design is now more aggressive than before, with a pair of fang-like trims that go all the way up along its side to the taillights.

Things remain pretty much the same inside the 2024 Nismo GT-R’s cabin. The black-red combo lives on inside here, as few parts like the gear lever, front dash and door cards, as well as the sporty steering wheel are being donned with red accents. Fortunately, Nissan managed to retain the Recaro racing buckets for the 2024 GT-R Nismo, albeit these new seats are more bare-boned with less cushionings and more carbon parts exposed.

Apart from that, the 2024 GT-R Nismo sports a set of 20-inch forged wheels, finished in back with red accents around the rim. While the T-Spec gets retro colourways, the GT-R Nismo will also be offered with a new Nismo exclusive colour known as Stealth Gray.

Under the hood, the 2024 GT-R still harnesses the ol’ reliable 3.8-litre VR38DETT twin-turbocharged V6 mill that delivers 565 HP and 632 NM. Said mill is mated with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox that later sends power to an all-wheel-drive system. The up-specced GT-R T-Spec will receive a handful of performance upgrades, including a set of carbon ceramic brakes derived from the Nismo-spec GT-R, and refined dampers.

For the 2024 GT-R Nismo special edition, the same VR38DETT engine is being upgraded and being bestowed with a higher state-of-tune, rated at 600 HP and 651 NM. Albeit harnessing the same mill as the previous Nismo GT-R, the 2024 model benefits from few extra performance updates, including a new limited-slip front differential, as well as a re-tuned suspension system.

The 2024 Nissan GT-R is poised to be delivered as early as Spring 2023, with the Nismo special edition bound for an arrival later in the summer. As of writing, the updated 2024 GT-R models will be JDM-exclusive models, with launches in other key markets like the US, who recently launched the 2023 GT-R for its market, and the rest of Asia remain to be seen.

One thing’s for sure is that the European folks won’t be getting this at all, as the GT-R was discontinued in the continent last year due to emission regulations. Perhaps the rumoured electrified GT-R might fare-off a tad bit better against the EU lawmakers…
