- BYD Smartwatch - Alcohol Level Detection To Combat Drunk Driving
According to Yiche, a Chinese media, BYD's smartwatch patent has been given the greenlight by the country's intellectual property agency. BYD? A watch? Aren't they an automotive manufacturer you ask, we wondered the same too. The uniqueness of this wrist watch is its ability to detect alcohol consumption which would come in handy when addressing the issue of drunk driving.
Other handy features which would also make it a good sports/lifestyle watch are ability to display your ECG features, heart rate, body temperature, blood oxygen levels and blood pressure monitoring/analysis. Pretty much a full health monitor strapped on your wrist, imagine that!
BYD has been working on a smartwatch for quite some time actually, back in Nov 2021, they released a smartwatch that could unlock BYD vehicles. According to BYD, the watch at that time had functions such as smart ignition, comfortable entrance, smart locking, raising and lowering windows, and opening the tailgate. It was scheduled to replace BYD car keys, but somehow there was no continuation on that project.
The current smartwatch however differs significantly from the earlier one with a simplistic design that resembles Apple's smartwatch.
Although this idea of a smartwatch is not new amongst car manufacturers, most would not have their own timepiece but rely on third-party smartwatches that can be synced with a car app. Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen are among the automobile manufacturers that allow consumers to connect their Apple watches to their vehicles.
