Geely Introduces A New Electric Car Series, Beginning With A Sedan
Geely is kicking off the year with a brand new electric sedan, followed by an entire new EV series. Rather than launching a new brand, the new vehicles will be sold under the Geely umbrella.
Among global automakers, Geely has one of the most interesting automotive portfolios. Lotus, Volvo, Polestar, Lynk & Co, Zeekr, and the new brand Radar with its electric pickup truck are all owned by the company.
Then there's LEVC, Proton, Geometry, Livan, Farizon, and Geely. As if that weren't enough, the company also owns a stake in Smart and Aston Martin. Add to that its recent acquisition of Meizu to round out all things digital, and we have a single company spread across the globe in many markets.
Geely's new electric sedan is expected to be slightly smaller and less expensive than the Zeekr 001. Zeekr will maintain its position as a luxury brand, and the new car, along with its soon-to-be-announced siblings, will occupy the higher end of the market without infringing on Zeekr's territory.
Geely is leveraging its highly adaptable SEA platform, which already serves as the foundation for many electric vehicles, including the Smart #1 and Smart #3, Zeekr 001 and 009, Lotus Eletre and the upcoming Lotus Envya, Volvo EX90 and the Smart's sibling, the Volvo EX30. It's amazing what can be accomplished when the foundation is as strong as the SEA platform.
With Geely using its own name for the new family of EVs and Zeekr taking the high-end spot, it is up to other brands to fill the market's remaining gaps. Geometry will sell the most affordable electric vehicles, while Jidu will sell some of the most futuristic, with the Jidu ROBO-01 and ROBO-02 models serving as market testing tools.
Geely has a long way to go to catch up to BYD, but it already has solid numbers to back up its claims. In 2022, the Geely Group sold over 2.3 million vehicles, including gasoline and diesel-powered models.
