JPJ Is Now Assisting Manufacturers With Recall Announcements

It seems the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is taking a more proactive approach towards addressing vehicle recalls. The department adds that it will now assist manufacturers to spread the word by posting ongoing recall campaigns and announcements  on its official website and social media pages.

According to the JPJ, this initiative aligns with the wishes of its director general Datuk Zailani Haji Hashim during his speech at a bilateral meeting with key Japanese authorities involved in similar matters. In said speech, he also emphasised benchmarking activities for recalls in Malaysia with similar efforts  implemented in Japan.

The department took to Facebook yesterday with a lengthy post explaining what vehicle recalls effectively were and why motorists should take such notices seriously on the ground of safety. Included in said post too were a list of vehicles from several brands that are currently experiencing a product recall.

Amongst them are notable marques such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Perodua, Toyota, as well as key two-wheeled marques such as Honda Motorcycles and Suzuki. The posting urges owners of the affected vehicles listed to have their vehicles checked out and have any potential issues addressed or rectified.

For the uninitiated, product recalls are a relative norm amongst many manufacturers, usually done to address and rectify both minor and major defects in their respective products. Much of the former aren’t widely publicised either due to low numbers affected or low risks of harm or death. For minor recalls, most manufacturers tend to seek out affected owners directly.

As for major recalls, these usually are the ones that pose a serious threat to safety, or affect a high number of products. For such recalls, most manufacturers invest in a great deal of resources to publicise and inform the public in order to mitigate and curb any serious injuries or death. One key example of this is the Takata airbag recall that’s still pretty much ongoing to this day.
