New Polestar 4 Coupe Crossover EV Seeks To Redefine Genre Norms

The long-awaited new Polestar 4 coupe crossover electric vehicle (EV) made its debut appearance this week during Auto Shanghai 2023. Its launch here is significant given the fact that the model will be produced in China by parent company Geely at its Hangzhou Bay facility.

Distinct dual-blade forward LED lighting arrangement is lifted off Polestar's Precept concept.

Sleek design isn't just pretty, it's also very aerodynamic with a coefficiency figure of 0.269.

A key talking point about the Polestar 4 is its design, most notably being its absence of a traditional rear windscreen. Much of the model’s design cues were inspired by the brand’s stunning Precept concept car, adopting its distinct dual-blade LED forward lighting arrangement as well.

By ditching the rear windscreen, Polestar says this “enables a new kind of immersive rear occupant experience.” With that, the traditional rear-view mirror is replaced by a high-definition digital rear-view mirror unit that receives images from a rear camera mounted in the roof.

No rear windscreen in this striking EV coupe crossover.

Crucially, the Polestar 4’s striking design wasn’t just meant to look pretty, it’s sleek profile was made to be aerodynamically efficient, boasting a low drag coefficiency figure of 0.269. This, in turn, sees it aiding further with prolonging this EV crossover’ maximum range, especially in long-range single-motor form.

Underpinning the Geely Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform, the Polestar 4 sports a large 2,999 MM wheelbase, resulting in abundant cabin space. It also features a full-length glass roof as standard that extends behind the heads of rear passengers, which can be optioned with an electrochromic function.

Geely's SEA platform grants abundant cabin space.

Eco-friendly and sustainable materials are employed in the cabin, such as ECONYL, 100% recycled PET, and MicroTech vinyl.

The cabin heavily employs eco-friendly materials such as 100% recycled PET, bio-attributed MicroTech vinyl and animal welfare-secured Nappa leather. Other sustainable materials used include ECONYL that includes reclaimed fishing nets, and natural fiber polypropylene for specified door trim panels.

Polestar 4 features all digital 14.7-inch HUD, 10.2-inch instrument panel, and 15.4-inch infotainment displays.

Key cabin tech, on the other hand, sees things like a 14.7-inch Head-Up Display (HUD), a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel, 15.4-inch infotainment system powered by Android Automotive OS, and an optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with optional Nappa Pack that adds a pair of additional speakers in the headrests of the front seat.

102 kWh battery sees Long Range Single Motor Variant offer up to 600 KM range (claimed, WLTP).

Over to the powertrain, both single- and dual-motor setups are available, the former being rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and the latter all-wheel-drive (AWD). All variants will harness a sizable 102 kWh battery pack that accepts DC rapid-charging inputs as high as 200 kW, AC charging inputs up to 22 kW, vehicle-to-load feature, and a heat pump that can precondition the cabin and battery.

As for output, performance and range, the Polestar 4 in Long Range Single Motor form will serve up 272 HP and 343 NM. This variant will also boast the longest claimed range of 600 KM (WLTP).

Long Range Dual Motor variant, which has 544 HP, also gets semi-active suspension.

The most powerful of the lot is the Long Range Dual Motor, which delivers 544 HP and 686 NM, thus enabling 0-100 KM/H in just 3.8 seconds, and it also gets semi-active suspension for enhanced agility. Predictably, this level of pep does see it trade off a little in terms of range, but its claimed 560 KM (WLTP) figure remains rather respectable to say the least.

12 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors plus 1 radar forms the basis of the SuperVision ADAS suite primed on board.

As for driver assistances, the Polestar 4 is primed with the latest SuperVision Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) from Mobileye. It harnesses 12 cameras, 1 radar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors as standard and also includes an advanced driver monitoring system. There’s also an optional Pilot Pack available that adds automatic lane changing ability when the driver taps the turn signal.

In terms of availability, the Polestar 4 is set to enter China’s market circa November first. Entry into the North American, European, and Asia Pacific markets is slated to start from early 2024 instead, with sales scheduled to ramp up throughout the year.
