johor_accident_17082021.jpeg According to the Transport Ministry, a total of 915,874 road accidents were recorded in 2021 and 2022, with approximately 1% of them resulting in fatalities, The Star reported.

There were 545,588 road accidents in 2022, with 6,080 deaths (1.1%) and 370,286 accidents in 2021 with 4,539 deaths (1.23%), Minister Anthony Loke said.

Loke also stated that a study conducted by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) revealed that human behaviour was the primary cause of road accidents, followed by road design, road infrastructure condition, and vehicle condition.

Miros and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) are continously running campaigns and enforcement measures to promote safe driving etiquette,” Loke said in a written parliamentary reply to Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan (BN-Kuala Pilah) on Tuesday (June 13).

Adnan requested that the Transport Minister identify the primary cause of fatal road accidents, as well as short, medium, and long-term solutions. 12cars_1518310451.jpg

In response, Loke stated that the Transport Ministry launched the Malaysia Road Safety Plan (PKJRM 2022-2030) on January 27, 2022, in order to address the issue of road accidents.

“The goal is to reduce the number of road accidents by 50% by 2030.

“Various programmes and strategies involving stakeholders from local communities and the private sector have also been planned,” he said.

He also mentioned that both active and passive strategies were used to improve vehicle safety standards, including the establishment of a vehicle research and safety test centre, as well as improving the standards and mechanisms used to evaluate a vehicle's safety, among other things.
