More than RM50 billion was spent on subsidising fuels such as RON95, diesel and petrol, which were enjoyed by all Malaysians, including the T20 group.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the government intends to implement the targeted subsidy mechanism as soon as possible, but that developing such a mechanism, including those for diesel and RON95 petrol, is difficult and complicated.

As a result, Anwar stated that the government is considering several working papers and proposals concerning the mechanism in order to ensure more effective and timely implementation.

Anwar also added that the goal of implementing targeted subsidies is to ensure that only deserving individuals benefit from them. "Unlike electricity subsidies, we know the houses and factories, so it's okay," he said after a meet-and-greet at the Madani Hawkers Centre on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur. fu-6-(1)-full.jpg

Prior to this, the prime minister reportedly stated that it was unreasonable for the government to continue providing subsidies to the T20 group, such as the cost of performing haj and electricity.

He stated that this was due to the fact that at least 40% of the government's subsidies for the poor were also enjoyed by the aforementioned group.

Last month, Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan stated that the establishment of mechanisms for targeted subsidies is already 75% complete, and that the results of discussions involving various committees on these mechanisms will be presented to the Cabinet before any further decisions are made.
