Word from Australia has it that the next-gen Toyota Hilux will feature a new MHEV diesel heart.

Toyota Australia has reportedly confirmed that the upcoming new generation Toyota Hilux 4x4 pick-up truck, set for launch next year (2024), will feature a new mild hybrid (MHEV) diesel powertrain choice in its mix.

The 48-volt system will feature a dedicated 48-volt battery with a small electric motor-generator, plus automatic engine idling stop-start. Said MHEV tech will be mated with the existing 2.8-litre 4-cyl turbo-diesel mill the Hilux currently features, altogether promising improved fuel efficiency of up to 10%.

Toyota Australia says this new MHEV will see enhanced drivability and lowered NVH levels, all without hampering the Hilux’s renowned on- and off-road capabilities too. It also promises the Hilux’s 3,500 KG braked towing capacity will also remain intact.

The new Hilux MHEV for Australia will see the familiar 2.8-litre 4-cyl turbo-diesel pictured paired with a 48-volt battery, electric motor, and automatic engine idling stop-start.

Toyota Australia further adds that with the 48-volt MHEV tech primed in the robust and proven workhorse such as the Hilux, it stands as a demonstration of Toyota’s “commitment to reducing the fuel consumption of its vehicles without compromising on the performance and capability demanded by customers.”

While unconfirmed for now, the next-gen Hilux model for Australia will likely see this new MHEV powertrain featured in higher-end variants offered in said market – i.e. 4x4 SR5 and Rogue Double Cab. Indeed, this should keep the next-gen Hilux on equal footing with the rumoured Ford Ranger PHEV.

However, the availability of the Hilux MHEV in other markets – ours included – remains uncertain. Locally, all signs point towards perhaps a long wait given how far behind we are with the Hilux model compared to what the Aussies get, which include a wide-bodied Rogue and a properly peppy Hilux GR Sport.

It remains unclear if this reported new MHEV-powered Hilux will be offered in other markets besides Australia. Would you fancy one though?

However, this could change should demand for a partially electrified and promisingly more frugal flavour of the Hilux exists amongst local buyers. Would you want a partially electrified Toyota Hilux pick-up truck? Or would you instead prefer a fully electrified BEV or hydrogen FCEV version instead?
