Toyota Gazoo Racing Season 6 Continues With Round 2 of GR Vios Challenge
The sixth season of the Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR) Festival is about to continue this weekend, as the Round 2 of the Toyota GR Vios challenge is set to commence. For the second round, drivers will be racing their GR Vios under the bright lights of the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), taking place from June 3rd to 4th.
Spread across four classes, the second round of the GR Vios challenge will only be broadcasted online via Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia’s official website and social media pages. On this weekend alone, we will see a total of 45 drivers competing in the Super Sporting Class for elite and professional drivers, Sporting Class for amateurs, Rookie Class for young drivers, as well as the Promotional Class for celebrities.
Round 2 kicks-off on Saturday, June 3rd, where the livestream broadcast will commence at 6.30 PM for Race 1 of the Sporting Class, followed by a brief intermission at 7.35 PM for a performance by local actress, singer and five-time former celebrity racer Janna Nick. Racing action will continue on 8.00 PM with the first race of both the Super Sporting and Rookie classes, before the day being closed by the battle of celebrities in the Promotional Class.
On the next day, livestream broadcast again will commence at 6.30 PM for Race 2 of the Sporting class, followed by the Super Sporting and Rookie class later at 8.00 PM, as well as the penultimate race for the Promotional Class. Aside from racing, Day 2 will also host a special performance by singer and celebrity racer Khai Bahar at 9.40 PM, before the prize presentation ceremony concludes the Round 2.
“The excitement of the GR Vios Challenge is in its unpredictability – no one, no matter in which class they are in, has a clear advantage because they are all competing on a level playing field (one make race). As we’ve seen in Seasons 1 through 5, the fight for the championship will always be decided at the very end and the live stream of the racing action will ensure that spectators will not miss out on any of the battles on track,” said UMW Toyota Motor President Datuk Ravindran K.
Round 2 of the Toyota GR Vios Challenger will promise an action-packed racing, as there are no clear favourites to choose from at this early stage of competition. Drivers will take the opportunity to bag as many points as they can in time for the championship finale later in September this year.
As things stand, no less than six drivers from the Super Sporting Class stand a chance to take the grand prize home. So far, many young drivers have stepped-up to show the ‘old guys’ what’s what, but it would be foolish of them to discount the two veterans – Eddie Lew and multi-time GR Vios champion Tengku Djan Ley from winning the overall competition.
Things are also quite close in the Sporting Class, where last year’s Rookie Class champion Nabil Azlan has a 3-point advantage (36 points) over Crestmax Motorsport’s Bradley Benedict Anthony (33 points). Both drivers have one race win each to their credit.
On the other hand, the Rookie Class currently sees a very heatedly contested championship unfolding with all six young drivers jostling for positions. The top two contenders so far are Iman Danish who leads with 32 points, just 1 point ahead of Ariff Azmi, while a further four points behind is Nazmir Azlan on 27 points.
As for the celebrity-loaded Promotional Class, comedian Zizan Razak has made his mark this season by leading the pack with 41 points, which puts him just ahead of actor Shukri Yahaya, who currently bags 32 points.
The Round 2 of the Toyota GR Vios Challenge will be broadcasted live on Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia’s official website, as well as across all social media platforms.
