Get ready, an electrified and much quicker version of the second-gen AMG GT is coming!

At the on-going IAA Munich 2023 show this week, Mercedes-AMG has put a thinly-veiled prototype on display. Sources online purport that this is an upcoming and still in-development electrified version of the second generation Mercedes-AMG GT coupe that debuted last month.

Dubbed the AMG GT E Performance concept, it previews a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the new sports coupe that now sits as the flagship Mercedes-AMG product. A key tell-tale sign of its partial electrification is the presence of a charging port flap mounted in the rear bumper.

If that last trait sounds familiar, the Mercedes-AMG GT63S E Performance four-door coupe has a similar position for its charge port. In fact, this upcoming super-PHEV prototype concept is set to be offered as the two-door alternative against said four-door which also arrived on Malaysian shores earlier this year.

Apart from the additional charging port, it appears the AMG GT E Performance concept does receive minor styling tweaks to set itself apart from the new AMG GT that’s available in GT55 and GT63 guises, both packing the three-lettered performance division’s famed hand-built twin-turbo V8 mill.

Key additions seen in the prototype’s exterior include the optional rear wing, carbon ceramic brakes with gold-hued calipers, and black 21-inch wheels. These aside, there are little to no changes to note in this prototype over the second-gen AMG GT coupe it’s derived from.

As for the PHEV setup, the production-bound AMG GT E Performance concept is set to harness a similar setup seen in the aforementioned four-door version. It consists of a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 working in tandem with a rear-mounted electric motor plus battery setup too.

Mercedes were coy with the concept’s output and performance figures. For reference though, the AMG GT63S E Performance boasts a combined output of 831 HP and a whopping 1,400 NM. The same setup powers the latest S63 E Performance too, granting it with 791 HP and 1,430 NM of twist instead.

Latest second-gen AMG GT63 coupe already matches outgoing AMG GT Black series in terms of 0-100 KM/H sprint - just 3.2 seconds.

These figures suggests that the E Performance version of the AMG GT will have much more power than the previous-gen AMG GT Black Series, which had 730 HP and 800 NM. Presently, the peppier new AMG GT63 already matches said Black Series special in the 0-100 KM/H sprint – 3.2 seconds.

For now, it remains unclear as to when exactly this electrified and peppier E Performance version of the second-gen AMG GT will bow, but many sources have tipped it for a launch sometime in 2024. The same super-PHEV treatment is also expected for the open-top new SL Roadster too.
