- IWC Unveils The G-Wagon Of Watches
The Mercedes-AMG G-Wagon is a legendary off-roader, and IWC is paying tribute to its legacy with a pair of hefty Big Pilot's Watches.
The first is a 46.2mm case and crown made of 18-carat Armour Gold—a proprietary type of gold alloy that is significantly harder and more wear/water-resistant than conventional 5N gold. The fortified precious metal is combined with a black dial to complete a colour scheme inspired by the recently released Mercedes-AMG G 63 "Grand Edition."
IWC also offers the Big Pilot's Watch AMG G 63 with a larger 46.5mm case made of Ceramic Matrix Composite, or CMC, for a more technical look.
CMC synthesis, which was developed in collaboration with the German Aerospace Centre, starts with a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, which is then heat treated over several days, converting the polymer to carbon and leaving behind a dense weave of fibres. After that, the material is coated in silicon and heated again, causing the silicon to chemically react and form black silicon carbide ceramic. In a nutshell, the case is extremely tough and abrasion-resistant.
Apart from the case material, both watches have a similar eye-catching design. The dials' relief texture is reminiscent of Mercedes-AMG intakes, and opposing subdials are wrapped in white rings in reference to the G-Wagon's headlights.
Unlike the classic Big Pilot's Watch, which has printed numerals and indices, these limited editions have black PVD-coated appliques filled with luminous material.
The 52010 automatic movement, visible through the tinted sapphire caseback, provides power. The remaining seven-day power reserve is displayed on the dial at 3 o'clock.
The IWC Big Pilot's Watch AMG G 63 in Armour Gold is now available for slightly more than $37,000.
