PROTON just announced that it has sold over 100,000 units for the sixth year in a row, surpassing this milestone in August, a month sooner than in 2022. They supplied 13,955 units (domestic + export) in August, bringing 2023 YTD sales to 104,602 units. This represents a 19.6% growth, or 17,121 units more than the same period the previous year.

Based on a total industry volume (TIV) of about 74,200 units for the month, PROTON's market share for August is expected to be 18.8%, with a YTD market share of 20.8%. It is worth mentioning that PROTON's sales growth continues to outpace TIV's, which is predicted to reach 12.2% in 2023.

Proton's sales will increase in 2023 mostly due to four models that are market leaders in their respective segments. The Proton X90, their most recent addition, leads the D-segment SUVs with 2,944 units sold so far, including 719 units in August.

With 22,750 units sold to date, the Proton X50 leads the B-segment SUV market, while the Proton Exora leads the C-segment MPV market with 3,150 units delivered to date. The Proton Persona also performs well, with 16,561 units sold YTD, making it the category leader in the B-size sedan class.

The Proton Iriz sold 654 units in August, bringing the YTD total to 5,362 units, a 50.3% increase over the previous year. Finally, in the month, the Proton X70 sold 1,002 units, bringing its year-to-date sales to 7,999.

"After setting a new volume record the previous year, Malaysia's automotive industry is on a trajectory to reset the record books again in 2023 as PROTON and other brands continue to compete for sales," says Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar. The high number of new items introduced reflects the cheerful mood of purchasers, and with many more models set to debut before the end of December, we expect market conditions to continue to be very competitive.

He also added that, “For PROTON, our sales growth is a reflection of how the company’s focus on delivering better quality products paired to a premium experience delivered by the 154 3S/4S dealerships in our network, have a positive effect on customers. Going forwards, these efforts towards better products and services will continue and be boosted by the recent announcement of Proton Test Labs receiving ISO 17025 accreditation as well as the company’s impending entry into the EV space with smart Malaysia.”
