- Tesla Supercharger - Now 14 Tesla Supercharger Location Confirmed!
Say what you will, but the rate at which Tesla Malaysia (TM) is announcing supercharger locations is rather astounding, despite the fact that it has not yet placed a single Malaysian-spec Tesla in the public hands.
Even before the Model Y was announced in Malaysia, Tesla unveiled on July 14 the initial 10 charging station locations throughout the country, with one location, Pavilion Mall, Bukit Bintang, already set-up and ready for operation. A quick reminder that the site indicated is not the actual spot where the superchargers will be situated, but rather an indication of the general vicinity.
The initial 10 locations were:
- Iskandar Puteri, Johor
- Negeri Sembilan
- Dengkil, Selangor
- Bukit Jalil, KL
- Sunway, Petaling Jaya
- Jalan Raja Chulan, KL
- Jalan Kuching, KL
- Pavillion Mall, Bukit Bintang, KL
- Ipoh, Perak
- Perai, Pulau Pinang
Although the Pavilion Mall supercharger was ready, it was only open to the public on August 22, highly likely due to delayed permission from local authorities as the long-awaited Nation EV Guidelines are still in the works for the longest time. Supercharging fees were also announced at the "go-live" at RM1.25/kWh, with an idle tax of RM4/minute.
Since then, Tesla Malaysia has added four more locations for future Tesla Superchargers in less than a month. The four new locations are:
- Jalan Utara, Petaling Jaya Selangor
- Cheras, Kuala Lumpur
- Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur
- Alor Gajah, Melaka
Unlike other charging station operators (CPO), Tesla Malaysia was able to quickly secure and set up its proprietary supercharger network thanks to the government's open arms under MITI's new BEV Global Leaders Initiative aimed at strengthening the local BEV industry.
However, no word on which 15 (30%) of the 50 supercharger stations will be open to non-Tesla brands, as required by the BEV Leaders Initiative that paved the way for Tesla's entry into Malaysia. Furthermore, we do hope Tesla will consider collaborating with other CPOs to expand the nation's overall charging network growth and make it available to all other brands, as charging network expansion is critical to EV sales and it would in the end build user confidence and eliminate range anxiety eventually.
