- BYD Will supply Iron-Based batteries for First China-made EV models
According to CAC, BYD will provide affordable iron-based batteries for Audi's Q6L e-tron, the German automaker's first electric vehicle model built on a specific premium EV architecture and produced in China.
Concurrently, more expensive, high-energy nickel-based batteries will be supplied to Audi by the Chinese battery giant CATL, according to reliable sources.
With an annual capacity of 600,000 units by 2024, the Volkswagen subsidiary announced in March that it would begin mass production of the Audi Q6L e-tron, Q6L Sportback e-tron, and A6L e-tron at its joint facility in Changchun, Northeastern China, in partnership with partner FAW Group.
Audi vehicles designated with a L in their names are exclusive to China and have a longer wheelbase. Audi's joint venture with the state-owned automotive giant First Automobile Works in China is called FAW-Audi. FAW has a 40% stake in the project, compared to 60% held by Audi and VW.
Second only to CATL in terms of production volume, BYD is a major Chinese power battery manufacturer, albeit its primary market is its own range of new energy vehicle (NEV) models.
Although BYD has worked hard to make its batteries available to other automakers, the Cailian report pointed out that the company's models still account for roughly 95% of the total.
BYD's batteries are primarily based on the lower-cost LFP chemistry, whereas CATL dominates the LFP and ternary battery markets.
