Honda has unveiled its showcase lineup for the upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon 2024 show

The upcoming Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS) happening next month promises several customised concept models. Aside from Nissan, Honda is also participating in this showcase, with the Japanese automaker recently revealing its product lineup for this upcoming aftermarket-oriented motor show.

Honda WR-V Field Explorer Concept SUV

Starting with the sole SUV crossover model on the list, the WR-V Field Explorer Concept is based on the Japan-spec Honda WR-V. Unlike the second-gen WR-V model we got here, which was developed specifically for the ASEAN market, this subcompact SUV crossover is based on the Honda Elevate – a B-segment SUV specifically developed for the Indian market.

Back to the concept, this WR-V Field Explorer boasts some rugged and off-roading gear, including the all-black wheels shod in off-road tyres, protective side skirts, as well as a functional roof rack. Elsewhere, other cosmetic changes present here are the dark-tinted headlights and taillights, the new front grille design with Honda lettering and three yellow-hued LED marker lights, matching yellow fog lamps, and a slew of black accents that replace the standard aluminium and chrome trims.

On the powertrain front, this WR-V concept still employs the same 1.5-litre 4-cyl nat-asp mill as its donor, generating 119 HP. Drive is sent to its front wheels (FWD) via a CVT gearbox, with the AWD setup still absent in this rugged, off-roading concept that boasts a generous 220 MM ground clearance.

Aside from the WR-V concept, Honda’s lineup also includes several customised models, including the modified FL5-gen Honda Civic Type R Mugen. Previewed as a concept at last year’s TAS showcase, this Mugen-tuned hot hatch comes fitted with a more aggressive, carbon-laden body kit, which consists of a carbon fibre hood with functional vents, a larger, racing-style front splitter and rear diffuser, as well as a larger carbon fibre rear spoiler hued in gloss black.

The Mugen Type R still employs the same 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged K20C1 mill (left) used on the standard Civic FL5 Type R (right), producing 325 HP.

On the mechanical side, the Mugen FL5 Type R sports a tweaked suspension setup, plus beefier Brembo brakes and callipers hiding beneath its aftermarket alloy wheels. Honda, however, did not mention any specific upgrades on the FL5 Type R’s 2.0-litre 4-cyl K20C1 turbocharged engine, so we can assume it still produces 325 HP just like the standard, Japan-spec FL5 Type R.

The Honda Civic Type R-GT (top), the Civic Type R CNF-R concept (left), and the Red Bull RB19 Formula One car will also be presented at Honda's TAS 2024 showcase

Apart from the WR-V concept and the Mugen Civic Type R, Honda is also outfielding several racing models to highlight its motorsport’s involvement throughout the years. Among the racecars included are the Honda Civic Type R-GT from Japan’s Super GT Series, the Civic Type R CNF-R concept that runs on carbon-neutral fuels (CNFs), as well as the Red Bull RB19 Formula One car, which clean-swept the whole 2023 Formula One season, winning both the World Drivers’ Championship (WDC) and the World Constructors' Championship (WCC).

The Tokyo Auto Salon 2024 is poised to take place next month from Jan 12 to 14, taking place at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. We can expect more from Honda and several other Japanese automakers as we get closer to the TAS 2024 launch date, so be sure to stay tuned here at Caricarz.com for more updates.
