- Tesla Set To Announce New India Gigafactory In Jan 2024
Elon Musk previously hinted at Tesla's entry into the Indian market in 2023. Musk stated that it is "quite likely" that Tesla will establish a presence in India after meeting with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York City in June.
However, the Ahmedabad Mirror reported yesterday that Tesla is preparing to announce the establishment of the Tesla Gigafactory plant in Gujarat. The official announcement is expected to take place during the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit in Jan 2024, with Elon Musk in attendance.
Gujarat was chosen due to its strategic location and favourable business environment. Adding to which is the central government's willingness to make concessions to facilitate Tesla's smooth entry into the Indian market by lowering regulatory barriers and creating a favourable business environment for Tesla's operations in the country.
Furthermore, Gujarat's alignment with Tesla's export-oriented strategy, which caters to both domestic and international demand, played a significant role towards the decision.
If the plans come to fruition, Tesla's presence in Gujarat will add another milestone to the state's achievements. The Indian state already houses other automotive powerhouses such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata, and SAIC-owned MG.
However, neither Tesla nor India's central or state governments have made official announcements yet. As noted, this is expected sometime next month.
At the same time, The Investor Business Today reports that despite an initial uptick following the announcement of Tesla's foray into India and updates on the popular Model Y in China, Tesla stocks eventually fell by more than 3%.
