The eighth-gen VW Golf has been face-lifted featuring a host of changes all around.

After teasing it over the last few weeks, the covers are finally off. Say hello to the face-lifted eighth generation Volkswagen Golf (Mk 8.5) hatchback range. Debuting in time for its nameplate’s 50th anniversary, there’s indeed plenty of changes to note all around.

For the European market at least,  the hatchback model continues to see the Golf, Life, Style, R-Line, GTE, and GTI hatchback variants available. Each gets discreetly updated bumpers, and all models from the Style grade above have a black roof.

Each guise sees revised bumpers and new LED headlights. Available as a cost-option are sophisticated matrix LED setup.

All guises now feature redesigned LED head- and taillights with higher end guises gaining full-LED headlight setup with an illuminated VW badge. A more sophisticated matrix LED setup is available as a cost-option too.

At the rear, the Golf now gets fancier taillights featuring 3D-like graphics with three selectable patterns – mirroring what Audi offers on select models. For Europe, VW also added four new metallic paint options and a selection of five wheel designs ranging from 16- to 19-inch sizes.

Besides bigger infotainment touchscreens, VW have also elected to revert back to physical buttons in the steering wheel as opposed to haptics touch controls.

Arguably the most welcomed update lies in the cabin, which VW already previewed earlier this month at CES 2024. As a refresher, VW has reverted back to physical buttons in place of the haptic touch controls in its steering wheel – the latter being one of the biggest annoyance noted by owners.

The biggest change – literally – is the larger new tablet-style infotainment system measuring 10.4- to 12.9-inches – the latter primed in higher-end guises. The climate control sliders are still there, but they're illuminated now. Available too is an optional head-up display (HUD).

Besides traditional petrol and diesel options, the Golf Mk8.5 continues to see MHEV and PHEV flavours available too. The latter now benefits with a larger 19.7 kWh battery that accepts 11 kW AC and 50 kW SC charging inputs too.

Moving on to powertrains and the EU-spec Golf sees several revisions here starting with the entry-level Golf, which now gets a 1.5-litre 4-cyl TSI petrol heart outputting 113 HP and 148 HP. As usual, this variant sees drive going to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual box.

Next comes a mild-hybrid (MHEV) version dubbed the 1.5 eTSI, and this boasts the same output as the TSI version mentioned. However, this MHEV version is primed exclusively with a 7-speed DCT automatic instead.

Further up the range sees a 2.0-litre 4-cyl TSI petrol lump with 201 HP available and paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic. Available alongside which is an oil-burning 2.0 TDI diesel version that outputs 113 HP when paired with a 6-speed manual box, or 148 HP when paired with a 7-speed DSG.

Good news for Golf GTI fans as the face-lifted Mk8.5 hot hatch gains 20 HP more - it now churns our 262 HP. Bad hews here is that its 6-speed manual option has been axed, making it exclusively DSG-only now.

For the sporty Golf GTI variant, fans will be glad to hear that VW have given its 2.0-litre TSI 4-cyl turbocharged petrol heart a power boost from 242 HP to 262 HP. However, fans might also cry foul over VW’s move to axe the 6-speed manual option, making this hot hatch DSG only now.

Moving on to the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants, these now get new and larger 19.7 kWh battery pack that also accepts both 11 kW AC and 50 kW DC charging inputs, the later allowing 10-80% recharges in just 25 minutes. The bigger battery also promises improved electric range of up to 100 KM.

Besides the hatch, VW also showed the face-lifted Variant long-roofed estate (wagon) version of the Mk 8.5 Golf. However, this more practical bodystyle won’t be offered in either eHybrid, GTE, and GTI guises, though a revised Golf R Variant is expected to arrive later alongside the face-lifted Golf R.

Also shown is the long-roofed Variant estate version which also received similar upgrades. However, a peppier R version is set to debut later alongside the Golf R facelift.

Effectively, this might be the final significant update for the Golf in its internal combustion form. The upcoming ninth-gen replacement model is set to go fully electric and underpin VW Group's Scalable Systems Platform.

Said EV successor will enter production near the end of the decade in Wolfsburg, Germany where it'll be made with other SSP-based cars.
