- New Goodyear ElectricDrive 2 EV Tyres Debut At CES 2024
At CES 2024 this week, Goodyear debuted its new second-gen ElectricDrive 2 EV-specific tyres that are set to go on sale n North America starting May this year.
Though primarily a tech convention, the Consumer Electronics Show 2024 (CES 2024) happening now in Las Vegas has stood as critical avenue for automotive industry players to show off new tech.
Case in point: Goodyear debuted its new ElectricDrive 2 electric vehicle (EV)-specific tyres here earlier this week. This second-generation EV tyre from the leading tyremaker is poised for entry in the North American market first starting May this year.
Goodyear says the new ElectricDrive 2 rubber will see up to 17 different sizes available. This sees it stand compatible with a slew of popular EVs on sale today – Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Audi Q4 e-tron, and more.
For North America, Goodyear will offer the ElectricDrive 2 in 17 different sizes. This promises compatibility with a slew of popular EVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E pictured.
"We know EV drivers prioritize performance and a more sustainable tire. The ElectricDrive 2 was designed with at least 50% sustainable materials, a focus on providing greater traction and maintaining a quiet ride,” says Goodyear Americas vice president of product development, David Reese.
Headlining the Goodyear ElectricDrive 2 is its promise of improved grip levels and higher noise suppression over its predecessor. These are the result of said new tyres adoption of a new asymmetric treat pattern and the company’s proprietary SoundComfort Technology.
The latter tech works by having an acoustic barrier implemented into the tyre’s construction that reduces tyre air cavity resonance. The new tread pattern, on the other hand, sees the ElectricDrive 2 offer highly improved grip across both wet and dry conditions.
Unlike its predecessor, the new ElectricDrive 2 promises improved grip levels in both dry and wet weather, along with higher noise-cancellation thanks to its adoption of Goodyear's SoundComfort Technology in its design.
Notable too is the fact that the manufacturing ingredients of new Goodyear ElectricDrive 2 EV tyres production sees sustainable materials make up at least 50% of which. It includes soybean, rice husk, ash silica, and sustainably-sourced natural rubber.
Beyond the North American market, it’s unclear as to when Goodyear will introduce this new generation ElectricDrive 2 EV-specific tyres overseas. Nevertheless, given the booming global EV sales, we reckon it won’t be long before this new EV tyre goes on sale worldwide.
