2023 proved to be a stellar year for the Volkswagen Group as it shifted 9.24 million cars.

The mighty German automaking powerhouse that is Volkswagen Group took to X (formerly Twitter) late last week to reveal that it had a sensational 2023 in terms of sales. Altogether, the group shifted no less than 9.24 million vehicles last year, marking a 12 % improvement from 2022.

A lot of this comes as a result of both increasing demands, as well as other factors such as massive backlog orders borne out of the recent Covid 19 pandemic, as well as the Russia-Ukraine conflict that erupted shortly after.

A lot of the core Volkswagen brand's sales were driven by its SUV models like the Tiguan Allspace pictured.

Having overcome major logistical issues, the automaker was able to churn out more cars than before too. Key markets such as Western Europe saw 3.27 million cars shifted, thus marking a 21% year-on-year (YoY) gain here.

Next comes China where the group charted 3.24 million vehicles shifted, marking a 2% YoY growth. North America, on the other hand, saw Volkswagen Group chart 0.99 million vehicles sold, and marking an 18% YoY growth here too.

Closer to home, the group’s total collective sales in Asia Pacific also grew by 9%, totalling at 0.36 million vehicles delivered.

Altogether, the Volkswagen saw its shipments grow by 6.7% to roughly 4.87 million.

The group hasn’t given a detailed breakdown of each of its brand’s performance, but the core Volkswagen brand itself is known to have made big leaps in 2023. Sources online estimate said core brand saw shipments grow by 6.7% to roughly 4.87 million vehicles.

The latter also suggests that up to 52.63% - or slightly over half – these vehicles shifted bore the main Volkswagen crest. Moreover, 54.2% of which were comprised of SUVs, marking a 14.9% YoY growth over 2022 as well.

For now, Volkswagen Group’s 2023 sales results does seem impressive, but rivalling Japanese automaking giant Toyota have yet to release their 2023 sales performance figures yet.

The latter saw its 2022 sales total figure of 10.5 million vehicles, which allowed Toyota to retain the title as the world’s best-selling automaker for the third year in a row.
