Self-driving cars could soon be a thing in the UK following its government passing of a new Autonomous Vehicles Act.

The self-driving vehicle was invented by Ernst Dickmans, known as the father of the autonomous vehicle. Since then, brands like Tesla have made it into a globalised concept.  However, many countries have not adapted to autonomous driving vehicles because of the safety concerns surrounding the concept.

One of them is the United Kingdom, but recently it has come to light that self-driving cars might be on the roads of the UK in the year 2026 With the introduction of the Automated Vehicles Act. Fundamentally, the new laws aim to make roads safer by promoting self-driving technology and lowering human error, which the government claims accounts for 88% of traffic accidents.

“The plans to introduce self-driving vehicles provide the opportunity for more efficient travel, but safety must be paramount when [they're] rolled out onto UK roads.

“Vehicle technology to improve road safety can be designed into cars more quickly, reducing the likelihood of crashes, the workload of the emergency services, and avoidable casualties,” said AA president Edmund King.

The UK's Automated Vehicles Bill has been praised as a significant milestone for the self-driving industry, with the bill enacting a comprehensive liability framework for the safe deployment of self-driving vehicles.

The bill has the potential to save lives and provide clarity for insurers in establishing liability for self-driving. It has also been used to call for the UK's roads to be fixed before the next generation of vehicles arrives.

The cross-party Transport Committee has called for a cautious, gradual approach to the introduction of self-driving vehicles (SDVs) to avoid unintended consequences.

The committee has questioned the government's proposed "safety ambition" that autonomous vehicles will achieve an equivalent level of safety to a competent human driver, arguing it is too weak and vague.

The committee recommends the government set out a strategy for the future of human driving in a world of SDVs, including changes to driving tests and a plan to ensure all drivers fully understand SDVs.

Legal liability in SDVs will become more complex due to the shared responsibility between owner and vehicle software operators. Currently, the legislation is open for public consultation until June 11, 2024. KR
