- The Mugen Honda Civic Type R is The Ultimate JDM Monster
Mugen’s new upgrade package for the Honda Civic Type R FL5 will transform the hot-hatch into an ultimate JDM monster.
Renowned aftermarket tuning house Mugen has finally peeled off the wraps from its special Honda Civic Type R FL5 build. Previewed as the Civic Type R Mugen Group A at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon earlier this year, this special upgrade kit for the new Type R is set to hit the Japanese market anytime soon.
The Mugen FL5 noticeable gains a larger and more aggressive rear wing over the standard model.
Starting with the visual and aero upgrades, Mugen has garnered the FL5 with a larger and more aggressive carbon fibre rear wing that costs JPY 308,000 (RM9,391) by itself. Said rear wing is complemented by an equally aggressive front lip that can be opted to finish in Berlina Black to match the rest of the aero parts.
The aero upgrade continues on the side, with the Mugen FL5 also offered with the rear side splitters to complement the standard rear diffuser, plus the front bumper garnishes to make the front face look more aggressive. All in all, Mugen claims that these aero upgrades will grant the Civic Type R 25% more downforce than the standard model.
Apart from the aggressive aero kit, the Mugen FL5 also comes with optional 19-inch forged aluminium wheels that the firm co-developed with BBS. Codenamed BBS FR10, this new wheel costs JPY 176,000 (RM5,366) each and can be ordered together with new racing nuts and lock nuts.
The Mugen-ification work continues as we get inside this special FL5 Type R build, where customers can order some special parts for both cosmetic and performance benefits. Key highlights include the new carbon fibre central console, the Alcantra shift knob, as well as the new Recaro carbon fibre bucket seats that cost JPY 297,000 (RM9,055) a pair.
Besides those, Mugen is also working on a special carbon fibre steering wheel and the new taillight design for the FL5, both of which will be released in the near future.
Aside from the aero and cosmetic parts, Mugen is also developing a new exhaust system and performance damper setup for the FL5.
While the FL5 Type R’s K20C1 2.0-litre 4-cyl turbocharged engine remains unchanged, Mugen is currently developing several special mechanical parts to help improve the car’s performance. This includes a new single-piped sport exhaust system as well as new performance dampers for its suspension system, co-developed with Yamaha.
Mugen’s special upgrade package for the Honda Civic Type R FL5 will be exclusively available for the Japanese market for now, with sales for these parts set to commence in late September this year. We can expect to know more about the availability of this upgrade package in other international markets once all the parts have been released in Japan.
