- The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is the New Formula E Safety Car
The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT has been selected as the new safety car for the 2024 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
Within months since its global introduction, the all-new Porsche Taycan Turbo GT has been making headlines here and there. Besides obliterating the Tesla Model S Plaid’s Nurburgring lap record, this new EV GT is also being selected as the official safety car for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
Set to be on duty at the upcoming 2024 Berlin E-Prix later this weekend, the new Taycan Turbo GT will replace the 751-HP-rated pre-facelift Taycan Turbo S as the event’s new safety car. Touted as the most powerful production Porsche ever made, the Taycan Turbo GT boasts a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) setup capable of delivering up to 1,019 HP for a brief time of 10 seconds when the Attack Mode is activated.
Inspired by the Formula E race cars that it will be leading in the upcoming Grand Prix, this new mode can be engaged by pushing a dedicated button on the steering wheel or the right-hand paddle shifter. Once engaged, the Taycan Turbo GT is able to complete a century sprint in just 2.2 seconds, en route to its limited V-Max of 306 KM/H.
The Taycan Turbo GT is actually more powerful than Porsche's Formula E contender, the 99X Gen 3.
More importantly, this also makes the Taycan Turbo GT two times more powerful than the current third-gen Formula E race cars used in this year’s championship, which only boasts a total system output of 469 HP. This truly makes the Taycan Turbo GT one of those rare cases where the safety car is actually more powerful than the actual race cars it is in charge of.
Obviously, the Taycan Turbo GT weighs more than the actual Formula E race cars, with the EV GT tipping the scale at 2,290 KG without a driver. For reference, the third-gen Formula E race car weighs around 1,852 KG, including the driver.
Porsche will supply two different kinds of Taycan Turbo GT safety cars for the championship, with the Purple Sky Metallic-hued one coming standard with the Weissach package that essentially removes the rear seats and adds several additional aero parts.
Meanwhile, the Shade Green-hued unit comes with the standard four-seater configuration. Regardless of the versions, both safety cars are equipped with the usual equipment, such as warning lights, fire extinguishers, and tons of communications equipment.
Starting with the upcoming 2024 Berlin E-Prix, the all-new Porsche Taycan Turbo GT will be leading all the Formula E race cars for the rest of the 2024 championship.
