Toyota S-FR Concept Rumoured to Enter Production in 2026

As much as we've noticed how fickle Toyota executives can be when it comes to its electrification adoption, we must admit that they are one of the few JDM brands left that didn't outright neglect the performance cars segment.

To date, their line-up include cars that appeal to every segment and budget, including the GR Supra, GR Corolla, GR Yaris, and GR86. However, things are expected to get more interesting as the Best Car Magazine Japan just reported that the previously canned S-FR concept could be released in late 2026 or early 2027.

The S-FR, which stands for 'Small, Front-engined, Rear-wheel-drive,' is rumoured to be powered by a turbocharged three-cylinder 1.5-liter engine producing approximately 150 horsepower.

The SF-R was initially showcased to the public back in 2015 as a concept designed to compete with the highly popular Mazda MX-5, replace the MR-S. It was reported that the S-FR will have a compact and lightweight two-plus-two seating layout just like what we saw on the GR86.

Borne out of a collaboration between Toyota, Daihatsu, and Suzuki, the SF-R will have an MX-5-like configuration, with the engine mounted forward and driven by the rear wheels. This also makes the SF-R different from the MR-S’s mid-mounted engine layout.

While the initial S-FR concept featured an over-the-top design with a big grille and large fierce-looking headlights, these are said to be toned down for the production model, which will have a smaller grille assembly and more modern headlights.

However, aggressive aerodynamic parts like the rear wing, canards, splitter, and diffuser, have not been confirmed for production but may come as optional accessories or as part of the GR kit-up option.

According to Best Car Magazine Japan, Toyota plans to launch a base variant priced at JPY 3,500,000 (RM107,000), which would drastically undercut the Mazda MX-5's selling price.

As much as Toyota would like to outperform the Mazda MX-5 in its own game, history has shown that this will be a difficult feat. Toyota previously played the similar game with the Toyota MR-S but had to discontinue the series due to declining sales, whilst the MX-5 is still going strong till now.
