BMW Will Sell ICE Cars Alongside EVs for The “Foreseeable Future”
In a recent interview with UK title Autocar, German automaker BMW has confirmed plans to continue selling its internal combustion engine (ICE) cars alongside its electric vehicles (EVs) for the foreseeable future.
This decision highlights the company’s commitment to offering a diverse range of vehicles, catering to varying consumer preferences and market demands. Oliver Zipse, BMW’s CEO, emphasised the importance of flexibility in BMW’s product lineup during said interview.
He pointed out that while the shift towards electric mobility is undeniable, the market for ICE vehicles remains robust, particularly in regions where EV infrastructure is still developing. This dual approach ensures BMW can meet the needs of all its customers, regardless of their location or readiness to transition to EVs.
BMW’s strategy is a pragmatic response to the current global automotive landscape. In many parts of the world, including emerging markets, the infrastructure for EVs, such as charging stations and renewable energy sources, is not yet fully established.
By continuing to offer ICE vehicles, BMW aims to provide reliable and practical transportation options for customers in these regions, ensuring that they are not left behind in the global shift towards greener mobility.
Moreover, the varying pace of regulatory changes across different markets also influences BMW's decision. While some countries rapidly adopt stringent emission standards and promote EV adoption through subsidies and incentives, others are progressing slowly. BMW’s flexible approach allows it to adapt to these diverse regulatory environments effectively.
Nevertheless, the company remains committed to its ambitious sustainability goals, which include significantly reducing CO2 emissions across its entire vehicle lifecycle.
BMW has already made substantial investments in developing its EV line-up, including the BMW iX3, i4, and iX models.
These investments will continue alongside the production and sale of ICE vehicles, ensuring that BMW remains at the forefront of both traditional and electric automotive innovation. KR
