EV Connection (EVC), the operator of JomCharge, announced a partnership with SP Mobility, a subsidiary of SP Group Singapore. Together, both firms seek to enhance charging experience for electric vehicle (EV) drivers travelling between Malaysia and Singapore by offering greater EV charger accessibility and reducing range anxiety.

This partnership, according to EVC, comes as EV adoption rates rise in both countries. In Malaysia, EV sales increased by nearly 150% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. In Singapore, one in three new cars registered by May 2024 were EVs, almost doubling the figures from 2023.

The first phase of this partnership allows users to purchase credits that can be utilised across the Causeway. Initially, this will be available only to GAC AION EV owners both in Malaysia and Singapore.

In Malaysia specifically, the AION Y Plus is currently the only model available from the Chinese marque via distributors WTC Automotif. In contrast, Singapore sees both the Y Plus and ES models on sale.

However, the process is a bit complicated:

  • Malaysian Drivers: JomCharge users in Malaysia will need to buy SP credits from any GAC AION dealership in Singapore. After purchasing the credits, they can create a charging account on the SP app, where the credits will be available once the account setup is complete.
  • Singaporean Drivers: The process is simpler for Singapore-based drivers. SP users purchasing new GAC AION EVs will receive JomCharge credits bundled with the sale. They can then download the JomCharge app, sign up, and use the credits at JomCharge chargers in Malaysia.

There are plans to eventually offer credits through other platforms and directly to the public. The long-term goal is to integrate roaming capabilities, allowing users to access chargers in both countries with just one app — either JomCharge or SP; however no details were revealed as of yet.

According to EVC MD, Ir. Lee Yuen How, "We are excited to partner with SP to make cross-border charging more seamless. With the rise in EV adoption and the high traffic across the Causeway, this partnership is timely."

Meanwhile, Dean Cher, SP Group’s Head of Mobility, added, "This partnership responds to customer feedback for better solutions when travelling between Malaysia and Singapore. Partnering with EVC allows us to offer greater convenience to EV drivers in both countries."

Anyhow, for those interested in giving this a try do reach out to any GAC AION dealership near you for assistance with registration.
