Geely has officially unveiled images of its Galaxy Starship 7 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV powered by its latest Thor PHEV system upon its launch in 2025.

According to previous details from China’s MIIT in September, the Galaxy Starship 7 PHEV will be positioned as a mid-sized SUV, similar to the Galaxy E5 EV, with both models sharing the same Global Energy Architecture (GEA) platform.

In terms of dimensions, the Starship 7 will measure 4,740 mm in length, 1,905 mm in width, and 1,685 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,755 mm—making it slightly larger than the E5 EV. It will also feature a sleek rear design with hidden exhaust outlets and horizontal through-type LED tail lights. Its side profile reveals traditional door handles, unlike the flush ones found on the E5 EV.

According to details published on CarNewsChina, the Starship 7 PHEV will be powered by a 110 HP-rated 1.5-litre engine paired with a front-driven electric motor that is juiced by an LFP battery pack which most likely is from Geelys own Aegis lineup. Two battery options will be available: either a 19.09-kWh pack offering a 101 KM pure electric range or a larger 28.94-kWh pack with a 150 KM electric range.

The PHEV model is expected to offer fuel consumption rates of 4.85L/100 km and 4.88L/100 km, depending on the variant, with curb weights of 1,724 KG and 1,790 KG, respectively. Additionally, DC fast charging will also come standard, although no figures were given by the automaker for now.

Inside, the Starship 7 PHEV will feature a two-tone colour scheme and many design cues similar to the E5 EV, including a flat-bottom, double-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a floating infotainment panel, a large digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, and a continuous air-conditioning vent spanning the dashboard. The Flyme cockpit audio system, with raised dash-mounted speakers, is also present.

However, the key differences between the Starship 7 PHEV and the E5 EV lie in the centre console, where the layout of the wireless phone charger, cupholders, and rotary gear knob have been reconfigured.

With Proton recently announcing its e.MAS brand and plans to introduce at least five new models featuring various powertrains, including PHEVs and BEVs, the Geely Galaxy Starship 7 could potentially make its way to Malaysia as a right-hand drive version under the Proton e.MAS brand, possibly as the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV.

This model could most probably debut sometime next year after the Chinese model launch similar to how the E5 is being launched this year.

Looking ahead in 2025, we foresee a wave of PHEV introductions is expected across multiple brands, beginning with Jaecoo’s launch of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV later this year. This is as fuel subsidy rationalisation approaches and consumers seek better fuel efficiency without fully switching to EVs.
