Malaysia is stepping up efforts to streamline the installation of Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) RFID tags by setting up more centres. This also includes convenient locations at Johor Bahru’s shopping malls, Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke revealed earlier today.

With the existing VEP centres in Johor Bahru and Woodlands overwhelmed by inquiries, the move to malls is seen as a creative solution to reduce long queues and frustration.

“Shopping malls in Johor Bahru have offered their spaces for RFID installation, which means drivers no longer need to endure long waits at the centres. Instead, they can shop while their RFID tags are being processed, and pick them up within two hours," Loke explained.

At Carz.com.my we find this partnership with malls couldn’t come at a better time. Many shopping centres in Johor Bahru have seen a drastic decline in foot traffic, forcing tenants to close their doors. Hosting RFID centres in these malls will be a win-win situation, potentially driving more visitors to struggling retail outlets while easing congestion at existing VEP centres.

He also clarified that only unregistered Singaporean drivers will receive warning notices at the border, while those who have registered and are awaiting RFID tags will be exempt.

Since the start of enforcement on Oct 1, Malaysian authorities have checked 678 vehicles, issuing 50 warning slips to drivers heading to Singapore without VEP registration. Drivers entering Johor Bahru will also see LED reminders near the immigration booths.

Loke, further reassured drivers that Malaysia is taking a gradual approach to VEP enforcement by easing into it to ensure a smooth transition for Singaporean car owners.
