- Proton Retains Second Place As Car Sales Drop In Sept
National automaker Proton continues to hold the second-place position in the national automotive sales rankings with recorded sales of 11,269 units (both domestic and international) in September. Its total sales volume for the year to date (YTD) now stands at 112,758 units.
Proton’s projected market share is 19.1% for the entire year 2024 and 20.1% for the month.
“Total sales for the automotive industry were down in September, historically a slow month, as total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have dropped to its lowest point in 17 months.
“Early estimates show the number to be at just 56,067 units, which is a reduction of 22.2% from the previous month. The estimated YTD total for TIV however remains ahead of 2023 with a total volume of just under 590,000 units being 3% better than last year,” It said in a statement.
Separately, the national carmaker announced that it sold 1,466 units of its Proton X70 sport-utility vehicle (SUV) in September, the highest sales volume for the model since December 2022, regaining its position as the best-selling C-segment SUV.
“The achievement is the highest sales volume for the model since December 2022, nearly double the sales achieved in August this year and is proof of the strong interest from Malaysians for the newest Proton model.”
The two other Proton SUV models concluded the month with the highest sales, according to Proton. Once again, the Proton X50 sold 1,771 units, maintaining its excellent sales performance, allowing the car to maintain its position as the leader in B-segment SUV YTD sales, which it has had since its 2020 launch.
Proton's flagship model, the X90, reclaimed the top spot in the D-segment sales with 217 sold, bringing its year-to-date total to a market-leading 2,724 units.
The Proton S70 is another model that is leading its category for YTD sales, according to the national automaker.
“The C-segment sedan remains the cumulative sales leader for the segment and added 1,013 units to bring its total to 14,768 units in its first full year of sales.”
The Proton Saga, which ranked second among A-segment sedans with 5,162 sales last month, remains Proton's best-selling model. Proton Iriz sales were steady at 345 units, while its sedan sibling, the Proton Persona, recorded 1,295 sales.
