- Anwar Launches Proton Saga CKD Assembly Plant In Egypt
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched Proton Holdings Berhad’s new car assembly (CKD) plant in Giza, Egypt yesterday, with operations set to commence this Dec.
In his speech, Anwar further highlighted the assembly of the Proton Saga in Egypt as a step forward in strengthening Malaysia-Egypt ties through innovative collaboration.
According to him, "Proton is not just a player in the Malaysian automotive industry; it’s a national pride, known widely across regions, including Europe."
Also present at the launch were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Egypt’s Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir and Chairman of Ezz Elarab Elsewedy Industrial Investments, Hisham Ezz Elarab.
Anwar in his speech also emphasised that this collaboration would benefit local industries in both countries. Proton aims to export 16,000 vehicles to Egypt between 2024 and 2026, generating RM570 million in revenue, plus an additional RM20 million solely from spare parts sales.
During the ceremony, Proton Chairman Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar also added that Proton is targeting Egypt as a regional North African hub, with the Giza plant serving as its first left-hand drive production site outside Malaysia.
According to him, "This platform could open doors to neighbouring markets, establishing Egypt as a prominent central hub."
