Gentari Sdn Bhd (Gentari), a prominent charge point operator (CPO), aims to establish between 500 and 550 electric vehicle (EV) charging points across Malaysia by the end of this year.

This target was shared by Gentari’s COO Haikal Zubir who went on to state that the company currently operates 460 charging points, including 75 located along highways.

According to Haikal further, “Gentari’s EV charging stations will be strategically built along highways, urban areas, and selected districts. The goal is to enhance convenience for users by expanding access to charging points in critical areas.”

He made these remarks during Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Natural Resources (PETRA), Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof’s visit to Gentari-EVC’s EV charging station at the Southbound Senawang Lay-by today. The visit was part of the PETRA Southern Zone Squad Program to Melaka.

Haikal further emphasised that the increased number of EV charging stations is expected to address the limitations of charging power sources, particularly at highway rest areas (R&R).

“All Gentari charging stations are designed to provide fast and safe charging for users,” he added.

During the visit, Fadillah went on to advise EV users to only utilise Energy Commission (ST) licensed charging stations to avoid potential risks. He went on to warn EV users that unlicensed charging stations can pose significant dangers, such as vehicle fires.

According to him further, the government and private sector collaboration in expanding EV infrastructure is expected to accelerate Malaysia's energy transition efforts and promote wider EV adoption.

Now, despite this statement by Fadillah, we at Carz.com.my would like to add that the government has thus far played no part in establishing EV charging points and are solely relying on private entities like Gentari to assist the government in achieving its 10,000 EV charging points by 2025 goal.
