Chery Malaysia achieved another first after its Omoda E5  received the new SIRIM certification for an Electric Vehicle (EV) battery pack.

The efforts sees said EV crossover offering, which was also recently localised by the firm, the first in segment to receive this new certification.

"This certification signifies more than a stamp of approval; it reflects Malaysia's progress in adopting globally recognised safety and quality standards," stated Nur Fadhilah binti Muhammad, CEO of SIRIM QAS International.

Chery’s EV batteries had also already undergone rigorous testing in China, adhering to UN ECE R100 standard to ensure reliability, efficiency, and durability. This certification assures Malaysian consumers that Chery’s electrified offerings are equipped with safe and reliable battery technology.

So far Chery Malaysia only offers battery electric vehicle (BEV) models here, the Omoda E5 featuring a 61kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery, delivering a WLTP range of 430 KM plus 201 HP 340 NM outputs.

The Omoda E5 has also earned five-star safety ratings from Euro NCAP and ANCAP and is locally assembled at the Inokom Plant in Kulim, Kedah.

Looking ahead however, Chery Malaysia has already detailed plans to expand its electrified vehicle (xEV) offerings in 2025 to include hybrids and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) to further strengthen its position as a leader in sustainable mobility solutions.

These efforts from Chery Malaysia aligns with Malaysia’s national objectives for sustainable development and a greener future, fostering a cleaner and more environmentally friendly transportation landscape.

The Omoda E5 is priced at RM146,800 and is available in four colors, Aqua Green, Khaki White, Phantom Grey and Dark Black.
