Chinese Automakers Shift To Hybrid Exports Amid EU EV Tariffs

IMG-20241008-WA0071-full_normal.jpg The European Union's electric vehicle (EV) tariffs, which do not apply to hybrids, are forcing Chinese automakers to increase their shipments of hybrid cars to Europe and launch new models. This change permits companies such as BYD to grow in Europe in spite of the EU imposing tariffs of up to 45.3% on Chinese electric vehicle imports in late October to combat alleged improper subsidies.

Electric and petrol-powered hybrid cars are becoming more and more well-liked as an affordable substitute for combustion or all-electric cars. Analysts estimate that China's hybrid exports to Europe will increase by 20% this year, with a quicker rate of growth anticipated in 2024.

Hybrid exports to Europe increased threefold between July and October over the same time the previous year, making up 18% of all Chinese car exports to the continent.

The dominance of European and Japanese manufacturers in the hybrid industry is being challenged by Chinese manufacturers like BYD, SAIC, and Geely, who provide reasonably priced versions. Also, in an effort to lessen the effects of tariffs, several companies are moving their production to Europe.

Although a flood of Chinese hybrids would lead to fierce pricing rivalry in the European market for hybrid cars, analysts predict that Chinese companies will be more cautious because of concern that the EU will impose more tariffs.

In the meantime, Japanese automakers are resolving their overcapacity issues in China and capitalising on the expansion of traditional hybrids in Europe this year. Honda, which exports two conventional hybrids, one plug-in hybrid, and one pure EV model to Europe, saw a 29% decline in car sales in China during the first nine months of this year.
