In response to national security concerns, the U.S. Commerce Department is anticipated to propose a new regulation that would prohibit Chinese hardware and software from being used in connected and autonomous vehicles that are driven on American roads, Reuters has reported.
The Biden administration is under pressure to mitigate Chinese companies' influence over the US auto industry due to growing concerns about the potential risks posed by these companies collecting private information from American drivers and infrastructure.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the potential for foreign actors to manipulate cars that have sophisticated navigation systems and internet connections.

Report says that a potential wide scale ban has been discussed for several months, after President Joe Biden ordered an investigation into Chinese automotive technologies in February, citing national security concerns.
According to the report, the proposed rule would forbid the import and sale of automobiles from China that have automated driving systems or critical communications components. The United States has imposed a number of restrictions on Chinese imports prior to this possible ban. The Biden administration imposed new taxes on batteries and important minerals needed for the production of electric vehicles last week, in addition to imposing steep tariffs on Chinese imports that included a 100% duty on EVs.

The proposed ban could be made public this week, and it would apply to other US adversaries, including Russia, Reuters added. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo raised serious concerns in May about vehicles in the United States that use Chinese software or hardware.
Before it is finalized, the proposed regulation is anticipated to be available for public comment for a period of 30 days. If authorized, the hardware ban might take effect by January 2029, or the 2030 model year, while the software ban would begin to be enforced in the 2027 model year.

The limitations would cover a broad spectrum of vehicle technologies, such as fully autonomous cars that can run without a driver and those that make use of Bluetooth, satellite, and wireless connectivity.

Major automakers like General Motors, Toyota Motor, Volkswagen, and Hyundai have expressed concern about the proposal, stating that it would take a lot of time and money to implement.
