According to JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli, the road transport department (JPJ) has begun a thorough investigation and safety audit, with a special emphasis on technical concerns regarding the vehicle companies involved in the fatal accident that happened two days ago at Km204 of the North-South Motorway (PLUS) northbound in Melaka.

He stated that the department would step up enforcement, particularly with regard to technical infractions, since the department is extremely worried about the increasing trend of fatal accidents involving commercial vehicles, according to Bernama.

“JPJ will enhance its collaboration with the National Anti-Drugs Agency to conduct drug abuse checks on drivers and review periodic inspection procedures for commercial vehicles performed by the computerised vehicle inspection centre or other appointed centres,” he said.

Additionally, Aedy emphasised that JPJ would closely collaborate with law enforcement, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, and local authorities to inspect registered workshops and keep an eye on illegal ones suspected of renting equipment for vehicle inspections.

The department would also reevaluate and improve training programs for drivers of commercial vehicles, integrating technical knowledge and compliance components, he added. JPJ-commercial-vehicle-ops-Oct-2024-630x331.jpg

The incident, which was caused by a lorry's front right tyre becoming dislodged, involved a tour bus, two lorries, a car, and a multi-purpose vehicle. Seven were killed, including five members of a family, and 33 were injured.
