SAIC Motor Malaysia, who operates the MG brand in Malaysia, has announced its commitment in advancing road safety in ASEAN, with a focus on Malaysia. At a recent pledge ceremony with the Malaysian Ministry of Transport (MOT), the company emphasized its role in supporting Malaysia’s sustainable development goals and enhancing community well-being.

Emory QiFeng, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia said, “Safety is not just a priority as it is a shared responsibility. By working together, SAIC Motor Malaysia plans to drive progress, enhances vehicle safety standards and strengthens Malaysia’s position as a leader in road safety and sustainable mobility.”

The pledge aligns with Malaysia’s efforts to elevate vehicle safety standards, including ASEAN NCAP initiatives and global regulatory compliance. With this, MG Malaysia, a company under SAIC Motor Malaysia may also benefit by potentially subjecting its lineup to ASEAN NCAP crash tests.

This move could be particularly critical following the Australian ANCAP’s recent 0-star rating of the MG5 sedan. The rating highlighted safety shortcomings which according to MG Malaysia was due to the absence of seat belt pretensioners in the units offered in Australia.

According to MG Malaysia all units sold in Malaysia come standard with seat belt pretensioner and should the MG5 undergo ASEAN NCAP testing MG Malaysia is confident in restoring confidence in its offerings.

Such a strategy would not only align with MG Malaysia’s growing emphasis on vehicle safety but also position the brand as a credible player in the highly competitive new vehicle segment in Malaysia.
