- Previewed: GAC M8 PHEV, Target Q1 2025 Launch
The GAC M8 PHEV is now being previewed at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2024 (KLIMS 2024), where it attracted significant attention as a potential competitor in Malaysia's premium MPV market.
In addition to its public debut, several units of the M8 PHEV are already undergoing road tests in Malaysia. This development underscores GAC Motor Malaysia's active preparations for the local launch of the M8 PHEV.
Warisan Tan Chong Automotif, GAC Malaysia’s parent company, is targeting to officially introduce the Premium and Premium Luxury variants of the GAC M8 PHEV in the first quarter of 2025.
While the final specifications for the Malaysian market have not yet been finalized, the company appears to be focusing on the PHEV variant from the Grand Master Series as its flagship offering.
The M8 PHEV is equipped with a 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain co-developed with Toyota. This front-wheel-drive setup combines a turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 190 HP and 330 Nm of torque with an electric motor generating 182 HP and 270 Nm of torque. Power is delivered via a two-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission.
The vehicle’s Toyota-sourced 25.57 kWh Primeearth lithium-ion battery enables a pure EV driving range of up to 136 kilometers, with a total claimed range of approximately 1,032 KM under CLTC standards (846 KM WLTP). Charging options include both AC and DC, with the latter achieving a full charge in just 30 minutes.
In China, the M8 PHEV costs RMB 269,800–342,800 (RM 184,000–208,000). Without hybrid tax incentives, a CKD assembly strategy may be necessary to maintain competitive pricing in Malaysia.
For comparison, the Toyota Alphard, a dominant player in Malaysia’s premium MPV segment, is priced at RM 538,000 while other Chinese offerings like the Maxus MIFA 9 EV, Zeekr 009, and GWM WEY 80 are already making their way in.
