BYD has charted a new vehicle sales record in 2024, with a total of 4.2 million units shipped globally.

BYD has charted a new vehicle sales record in 2024, with the Chinese automaker selling a total of 4.2 million units globally. This astounding feat also marks the first time BYD has sold over 4 million vehicles annually, while marking a 41.3% increase compared to the previous year’s total annual sales of three million units.

From the 4.2 million total sales volume, 1.764 million were passenger battery electric vehicles (BEVs), marking a 12% increase from 2023’s total BEV sales figure of 1.6 million units. BEV sales represent about 41.5% of BYD’s total sales volume in 2024.

As for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), BYD has managed to ship a total of 2.485 million passenger PHEVs globally in 2024—a significant increase of 72.8% from the 1.4 million sales figure back in 2023. Due to its popularity globally over BEVs, PHEVs represent about 58.5% of BYD’s total sales volume in 2024, thus making it the most preferred vehicle type in the global market for the automaker.

With the production of its ICE-powered vehicles already ceased back in April 2022, BYD now focuses exclusively on new energy vehicles (NEVs). Given its record-breaking sales figure in 2024, we won’t be surprised to see BYD retaining its crown as the world’s best-selling NEV brand—a title the automaker previously won back in 2023.

Thanks to its rapid global expansion plans, BYD has also charted a soaring rise in its export volume, with a total of 417,204 vehicles sold outside of China in 2024—a staggering 71.9% increase from 2023.

Although no official numbers were published by other automakers as of now, BYD’s total sales volume of 4.2 million in 2024 is enough to put the Chinese automaker as the eighth largest automaker in the world in 2023.

Moving forward, BYD is slated to continue its rapid global expansion plans, with the automaker already planning to penetrate into new overseas markets such as South Korea and some other European countries in 2025.
