Hyundai Mobis has showcased its new holographic head-up display tech at the ongoing CES 2025.

Besides BMW, Korean automaker Hyundai, via its tech arm Hyundai Mobis, has also used CES 2025 to unveil its latest head-up display (HUD) that uses holographic technology to project information onto the bottom part of the front windscreen.

Dubbed the ‘Holographic Windshield Display’, Hyundai Mobis claims its holographic HUD tech to be more advanced than BMW’s Panoramic iDrive HUD system, as it has a benefit of being transparent. Using a Kia EV9 as a test mule, this HUD setup relies on a high-tech projector as well as a unique transparent film that measures only 100 micrometres thick, which has been applied on the bottom part of the windscreen.

This special film uses the light diffraction principle to efficiently deliver images and videos projected by the projector to the eye level of both the driver and passenger of the car. This also provides drivers with less distraction, as they theoretically cannot see what’s been projected to the passengers.

In the mule EV9, said film was installed on the bottom part of the front windscreen, but Hyundai Mobis noted that it can also be installed on the sides of the windscreen, so the holographic images projected would “work like a smartphone’s curved edge screen.”

Aside from the usual driver-related information, this high-tech holographic HUD can also display other information such as navigation, entertainment, and even side camera views, among other things. In the long run, this tech could eventually eliminate the need for both the traditional instrument cluster and an infotainment screen, as the whole windscreen can be transformed into a virtual display. Hyundai Mobis also added that the HUD works pretty well even in bright outdoor environments and looks like a traditional glass window from outside.

During the development of this holographic HUD system, Hyundai Mobis has worked closely with Zeiss for quite some time, with the pre-development phase of this tech completed sometime in the first half of 2024. According to the firm, this high-tech HUD will be ready to enter production as early as 2027, where it will be installed in future models by Hyundai Group, including both Kia and Genesis.
