BYD made significant strides in developing all-solid-state batteries, as revealed at the recent second China All-Solid-State Battery Innovation and Development Summit Forum.

Sun Huajun, CTO of Shenzhen BYD Lithium Battery Co., Ltd., announced that BYD rolled out 60Ah all-solid-state batteries from its pilot production line in 2024. The company plans to start mass demonstrations and installations around 2027, with large-scale installations targeted after 2030.

Sun notes that solid-state ternary batteries could achieve price parity with liquid-state ternary batteries after scaling up. He confirmed BYD’s ongoing research into next-generation batteries, including sulfide solid-state batteries.

He projected that 2027 to 2029 would be the demonstration phase for these batteries, primarily for mid-to-high-end electric vehicles. From 2030 to 2032, sulfide solid-state batteries are expected to expand into the mainstream EV market.

Lian Yubo, BYD’s Chief Scientist and Dean of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute, shared that solid-state battery technology will continue to face challenges over the next three years but become more feasible within five years.

Lian adds lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries will remain relevant for the next 15 to 20 years due to cost-effectiveness and stability. This is as solid-state batteries at its introductory phase only serve high-end models.

Ouyang Minggao, chairman of the China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP), emphasised the role of AI in battery R&D. He stated that AI-driven data analysis could enhance R&D efficiency by one to two orders of magnitude, potentially reducing development costs by 70% to 80%.

CASIP was established in January 2024 by Chinese automakers and battery giants, including BYD’s FinDreams Battery, CATL, NIO, CALB, EVE Energy, and Gotion High-Tech. This collaboration underscores the industry’s commitment to accelerating innovative battery solutions.
